Product Description
Madux James is the fifth square in a series of squares designed as a legacy for my grandchildren. Madux is thoughtful, sensitive and incredibly sweet, with an intellect that results in so many questions about the world around him.
Use a 5.00 mm hook if you need a 12" square for your project. I used a 4.5 mm hook for a 11" square to match the other squares in my legacy collections.

Madux James, a Legacy Square – Crochet Pattern Summary
What Is Being Made
Madux James, a Legacy Square is a crochet square designed by independent designer A Yarn of Serendipity (Pam Knighton-Haener). This square is the fifth in a series of legacy squares created as a family heirloom for the designer's grandchildren. Each square in the collection is named after and inspired by a family member, with Madux James representing a thoughtful, sensitive, and intellectually curious individual. The finished square measures 11 inches when made with a 4.5 mm hook or 12 inches when made with a 5.00 mm hook, making it suitable for incorporation into larger blankets, afghans, or displayed as individual decorative pieces.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
This intermediate-level crochet pattern employs US crochet terminology throughout. While the specific stitch techniques are detailed within the full pattern instructions, the project is designed for crafters with foundational crochet knowledge who are ready to work with multi-color construction and more complex stitch sequences. The pattern requires careful attention to color changes and stitch placement to achieve the intended design. Crafters are advised to read through the entire pattern before beginning to understand the structure and color progression.
Yarn and Materials
The Madux James square is worked using 4-ply worsted weight yarn in multiple colors. Two yarn options are provided:
- I Love This Cotton: 100% cotton worsted weight yarn, available in colors including Pewter, Red Clay, Taupe, Medium Burgundy, Aubergine, Ivory, Papaya, Curry, and Dark Denim
- Yarn Bee Fresh Haven: 100% tencel worsted weight yarn, including Red Clay and Deep Teal options
Two colorway options are provided in the pattern. Colorway 1 features a sophisticated palette combining Pewter, Red Clay, Taupe, Medium Burgundy, Aubergine, and Ivory. Colorway 2 offers a warmer, more vibrant combination of Papaya, Curry, Dark Denim, and Deep Teal. The pattern accommodates both natural fiber choices, allowing crafters to select based on preference for cotton or tencel characteristics.
Hooks and Finished Dimensions
The pattern provides flexibility in finished size through hook selection. A 4.5 mm crochet hook produces an 11-inch square, while a 5.00 mm hook yields a 12-inch square. This sizing variation allows crafters to customize their project based on their tension and desired final dimensions.
