Product Description
Maddie's Cardi Mark Two has been added to this page. An additional PDF, a narrower version of the original!
I designed this tiny cardi for Maddie.
I specialize in one piece knitting with minimal seaming.
This tiny cardi is designed to be knit flat, in one piece. The borders are moss stitch, this is done by casting on an odd number of stitches and beginning each row with k1,p1 repeating this to the end.
The triangles can be knit in several bright contrasting colours or just one. The triangles are constructed using short rows, just follow the pattern line by line!
Don’t panic over the w&t, Cat Bordhi explains wraps and turns, on youtube.

Maddie's Tiny Cardi by JaneTerzzaDesigns
What is Being Made
Maddie's Tiny Cardi Mark Two is a fitted baby cardigan designed for infants and toddlers. This knit flat cardigan is available in four sizes: 3/6 months, 6/12 months, 12/24 months, and 24/36 months, with chest measurements ranging from 14 inches (35.5 centimeters) to 22 inches (56 centimeters). The garment is knit in one piece, making it an efficient construction method for this classic children's sweater. This revised version is approximately 10 centimeters narrower than the original Maddie's Tiny Cardi, offering a more fitted silhouette while maintaining the same design aesthetic.
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several fundamental techniques suitable for crafters with some experience. The cardigan is constructed using the flat knitting method, meaning it is worked back and forth on needles rather than in the round. The pattern incorporates wrap and turn (abbreviated as w&t) shaping techniques to create tailored garment shaping. Increases are worked at strategic points to shape the sleeves and body, with one stitch increased at each end of designated rows. The construction method of knitting the entire piece in one piece reduces seaming and creates a seamless, professional finish.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes two primary stitches to create texture and structure:
- Moss Stitch: A textured stitch created by alternating knit and purl stitches in a *k1, p1* repeat pattern. This stitch is used for the ribbed cuff sections, providing elasticity and a decorative border.
- Stocking Stitch: The main fabric stitch, created by alternating knit rows and purl rows. This produces the smooth, classic sweater fabric that forms the body and sleeves of the cardigan.
Materials and Specifications
This cardigan requires DK weight yarn, with yardage totaling 150 to 200 grams depending on the size selected. The pattern calls for using odd balls of contrasting yarn for the initial cast-on and cuff sections, allowing for creative color combinations. Knitting needles required are 4 millimeter circular or straight needles. The pattern specifies a tension of 22 stitches to 4 inches (10 centimeters) and 28 rows to 4 inches (10 centimeters) in stocking stitch, which is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements.
Pattern Construction Overview
The cardigan begins with the first sleeve, casting on 35 stitches in contrasting yarn. The cuff is worked in moss stitch for 9 rows, followed by a knit row and purl row to transition to the main yarn. The body is then worked in stocking stitch with strategic increases to shape the sleeve cap. This one-piece construction method streamlines the knitting process and creates a polished, professionally finished garment suitable for a baby's delicate wardrobe.
