Product Description
Mackensie's Cowl is a long, lightweight cowl that can be worked up in 2-3 evenings of crocheting. It would be a quick holiday gift for a friend or relative.
The cowl is 53 inches (134.6 cm) around and 9 inches (22.9 cm) in width (from inside edge to the tip of the outside edging).
I used 3 hanks of Berroco Flicker which gives the cowl just a hint of sparkle and is soft and spongy. When I finished, I had about 1/2 of a hank of yarn remaining. I think Mackensie's Cowl would lend itself well to hand-dyed yarns.
The following stitches were used: Chain, Single Crochet, Half Double Crochet, Double Crochet, Treble Crochet, Slip Stitch. Stitch combinations: Picot
The edging requires a multiple of 14 stitches. So, if you decide to shorten or lengthen the cowl, you will need to make sure to have that multiple around in order for the edging to work out evenly.

What Is Being Made
Mackensie's Cowl is a long, lightweight crochet cowl designed as a quick-to-complete accessory project. This cowl measures approximately 53 inches (134.6 cm) around the neck and 9 inches (22.9 cm) in width, making it a generous neckwear piece suitable for layering or draping. The design is intended to be completed in 2-3 evenings of crocheting, making it an ideal choice for a holiday gift or a fast project for experienced crocheters.
Crochet Techniques and Construction
Mackensie's Cowl employs fundamental crochet techniques appropriate for an intermediate-level crocheter. The pattern utilizes a combination of essential stitches worked in a structured approach to create the cowl's drape and texture. The project involves working in the round or in rows to build the length and width of the finished piece. Finishing techniques include weaving in ends with a darning needle and optional blocking to refine the final dimensions and appearance.
Stitches Used
- Chain (ch) – used for foundation and turning chains
- Single crochet (sc) – provides a tight, dense stitch
- Half double crochet (hdc) – creates a medium-height stitch
- Double crochet (dc) – offers an open, airy stitch structure
- Slip stitch – used for joining and seamless transitions
Materials and Yarn Specifications
Mackensie's Cowl is designed to be worked in worsted weight yarn, requiring 470–567 yards (428–519 meters) of yarn total. The pattern was originally tested with Berroco Flicker, a blend of baby alpaca and acrylic fiber, though the design is noted as being well-suited to hand-dyed yarns, which would showcase the stitch pattern beautifully. Three hanks of the specified yarn provide sufficient yardage for the complete project.
Tools and Gauge
This project requires a size K crochet hook (6.55 mm) and a darning needle for finishing. The working gauge is 12 stitches and 12 rows in pattern equal 4 inches (10.16 cm), which is essential for achieving the intended finished dimensions. Blocking tools are recommended to enhance the final appearance, though blocking is optional.
