Lylo Rainbow Embroidery Pattern by DMC (PAT0068) – Free Downloadable PDF

The Lylo Rainbow is a charming hand embroidery design created through a collaboration between Srta. Lylo and DMC. This free downloadable PDF pattern guides embroiderers through stitching a colourful rainbow scene complete with clouds, worked in vibrant shades of DMC Mouliné Spécial ART 117 six-strand embroidery floss. The finished piece is a joyful, decorative embroidery ideal for framing, hoop art, or textile projects.

Design Overview

The pattern features a rainbow motif with accompanying clouds, rendered in a carefully selected palette of eight DMC thread colours. The design is bilingual, with instructions provided in both English and French, making it accessible to a wide international audience. The colour guide and technical chart are clearly laid out, with each section of the design assigned a specific colour code and stitch type for straightforward interpretation.

Techniques and Stitches Used

This is an intermediate-level embroidery pattern that introduces two distinct and visually striking hand embroidery techniques:

  • Wheel Stitch (Point d'Araignée) – Designated as Code Letter B in the pattern, the wheel stitch (also known as the spider web rose or woven wheel stitch) is used to create the bold, dimensional bands of the rainbow. This technique involves laying foundation spokes and then weaving thread over and under them in a circular motion to build up a richly textured, rounded form. It is worked using 6 strands of DMC Mouliné Spécial for maximum coverage and visual impact.
  • Chain Stitch (Point de Chaînette) – Also designated as Code Letter B within the technical chart, chain stitch is a classic hand embroidery stitch that creates a linked, looped line. It is well suited to outlining and filling curved shapes, contributing to the flowing structure of the rainbow design.
  • Cloud Sections – Designated as Code Letter A, all cloud elements in the design are worked using 2 strands of DMC Mouliné Spécial, giving the clouds a softer, lighter appearance compared to the bold rainbow bands.

Colour Palette

The design uses eight DMC Mouliné Spécial ART 117 thread colours, carefully chosen to recreate the full spectrum of a rainbow alongside soft cloud tones. The full colour list is as follows:

  • DMC 827 – 2 skeins (the only colour requiring more than one skein, reflecting its prominent use across the design)
  • DMC 907 – 1 skein
  • DMC 954 – 1 skein
  • DMC 996 – 1 skein
  • DMC 798 – 1 skein
  • DMC 602 – 1 skein
  • DMC 922 – 1 skein
  • DMC 445 – 1 skein

Skein quantities are calculated for the design size 16 as specified in the pattern. Embroiderers working at a different scale should adjust their thread quantities accordingly.

Materials and Tools Required

The pattern recommends the following materials and tools to complete the Lylo Rainbow embroidery:

  • DMC Mouliné Spécial ART 117 – six-strand embroidery floss in the eight colours listed above
  • Embroidery needle, size no. 12 – a fine needle appropriate for working with 2 and 6 strands of floss on fabric
  • Fabric (toile) – an embroidery-suitable fabric of the stitcher's choice
  • Design transfer tools – a Magic Sheet, transfer pen, or transfer paper is recommended to accurately transfer the rainbow design onto the fabric before stitching begins
