Lumi Legwarmers by Milja Uimonen

What is Being Made

The Lumi Legwarmers are a pair of knitted leg warmers designed to fit snugly around the calf and ankle. Available in two sizes—Small to fit calf circumference 12–14 inches (30–36 cm) and Large to fit 14–16 inches (36–41 cm)—these legwarmers measure approximately 15.5 inches (39 cm) in height. The finished garment features a tapered silhouette, with an ankle circumference of 9.25 inches (23.5 cm) in the Small size and 11.5 inches (29.5 cm) in the Large size, while the calf circumference measures 11 inches (28 cm) and 13.75 inches (35 cm) respectively.

Techniques Used

This knitting pattern employs several fundamental and intermediate techniques suitable for beginner knitters. The design incorporates yarn overs to create decorative openwork elements, decreases using both knit two together (k2tog) and slip, slip, knit (ssk) methods for shaping, and centered double decreases (ccd) for more refined stitch manipulation. The pattern also includes make one purl (M1p) increases, which are worked by picking up the strand between stitches and purling through the lifted loop to add stitches seamlessly. These techniques combine to create a fitted, shaped garment that tapers from the calf to the ankle.

Stitches Used

The Lumi Legwarmers are constructed using basic knitting stitches: knit and purl stitches form the foundation of the fabric. Yarn overs are used to create openwork or lace-like details, while decreases—including k2tog, ssk, and centered double decreases—shape the garment and reduce stitch counts where needed. Make one purl increases add stitches to expand the circumference in specific areas. The combination of these stitches creates a textured, patterned fabric with both solid and open sections.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The pattern calls for worsted to aran weight yarn, with a total yardage requirement of 215 yards (195 meters) for the Small size and 240 yards (220 meters) for the Large size. The suggested yarn is Garnstudio Drops Nepal, a blend of 65% wool and 35% alpaca, which provides warmth and softness. This yarn is available in 50-gram balls yielding 82 yards (75 meters) per ball; the Small size requires 3 balls and the Large size requires 4 balls. The pattern is worked on US 9 / 5.5 mm needles, and the recommended gauge is 17 stitches and 30 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) when working in pattern.
