What is Being Made

Lule is a women's knit top designed by Gabrielle Everett of Gabie's Knit Goodies. This downloadable knitting pattern is available in five sizes: extra small, small, medium, large, and extra-large. The garment features a fitted construction with color work elements, combining a main color with a contrasting color accent throughout the design.

Craft and Construction Techniques

This is an intermediate-level knitting project that employs circular needle construction for seamless knitting. The pattern utilizes top-down construction methodology, allowing knitters to try on the garment as they progress and adjust fit as needed. The design incorporates color work techniques, blending a primary color with a secondary contrasting color to create visual interest and pattern definition.

Stitches and Stitch Work

The main fabric is worked in stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic knit surface. The pattern requires competency with circular needle techniques, including working in the round for seamless construction. Knitters will work with stitch markers to track pattern repeats and shaping points, and stitch holders or waste yarn to temporarily hold stitches during construction of different sections.

Yarn and Materials

Lule calls for fingering weight yarn in two colors: a main color (MC) and a contrasting color (CC). Yardage requirements vary by size, with the main color ranging from 590 yards (539 meters) in extra small to 845 yards (772 meters) in extra-large, and the contrasting color ranging from 190 yards (174 meters) to 300 yards (274 meters) respectively.

The sample garment in size small was knit using Sweetgeorgia Tough Love Sock, a fingering weight yarn composed of 80% superwash merino and 20% nylon, offering durability and easy care. The sample features the colorway "Cranberries in the Snow" for the main color and "Violet" for the contrasting color.

Needles and Gauge

Circular needles in US size 4 (3.5 mm) serve as the main needles for constructing the body and sleeves. The pattern requires two different cord lengths: a 16-inch (40 cm) circular needle for sleeves and neckband work, and a 32-inch (81 cm) circular needle for the main sweater body. For the neckline and sleeve hems, US size 2 (2.75 mm) circular needles—two sizes smaller than the main needles—create a fitted, elastic finish.

The pattern is designed to achieve a gauge of 24 stitches and 36 rows per 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch using the main needles after blocking. Obtaining the correct gauge is essential for achieving the intended garment measurements and fit across all size options.
