Luhu Stitches Sweet Dream Chamomile Embroidery Pattern by Cyndy Young

The Sweet Dream Chamomile is a charming counted cross stitch embroidery design created by Cyndy Young of Luhu Stitches. This downloadable PDF pattern guides stitchers through creating a delicate chamomile motif worked on fine linen, then finished into a small fabric tube or sachet. Rated as a beginner level project, it is an ideal introduction to counted embroidery on evenweave linen, offering a satisfying and quick finish with professional-looking results.

What Is Being Made

The finished project is a small stitched linen tube or sachet featuring a chamomile floral design. The stitching area measures approximately 2 1/8 inches wide by 3 1/8 inches tall, worked on a fabric piece cut to roughly 5 inches wide by 9 inches tall. Once the embroidery is complete, the piece is sewn into a tube shape using a sewing machine, making it a lovely decorative or functional keepsake item.

Recommended Materials and Fabric

  • Fabric: Zweigart Raw Cashel Linen, 28 count — a premium evenweave linen that provides an elegant natural background for the chamomile design
  • Embroidery Floss: DMC B5200 (white), DMC 307 (yellow), and DMC 704 (used for backstitch only)
  • Additional thread: 12 weight DMC 5200 for finishing
  • Sewing machine thread to match the linen color
  • Measuring tape, iron, ironing mat or towel, stapler, and scissors

Stitches Used

  • Cross stitch — the primary stitch throughout the design, worked over two threads of the 28-count linen using two strands of floss
  • Backstitch — used for detail and outlining, also worked with two strands of floss over two threads, specifically using DMC 704
  • Quarter stitches — fractional stitches used to achieve fine detail and smooth curves within the chamomile motif
  • Basting stitch — used as a guide to mark the stitching area on the fabric before beginning the embroidery

Techniques Used

  • Counted cross stitch on evenweave linen — all stitching is counted over two threads of the 28-count fabric, a technique that gives precise, even results and is well-suited to beginners learning to work on linen
  • Centering the design — the pattern instructs stitchers to find the center of the stitching area by folding the fabric both lengthwise and widthwise, then starting from the center outward, a best-practice technique for accurate placement
  • Finger pressing — used to create fold guidelines before stitching, avoiding unwanted permanent creases in the linen
  • Fabric preparation and finishing — the PDF includes step-by-step instructions for preparing the fabric, including folding and pressing long edges, creating a basting guide, and sewing the finished piece into a tube using a 1/4 inch seam allowance on a sewing machine
  • Pressing and turning — after sewing, the seam is pressed open with an iron and the tube is turned right side out, then pressed face-down on a towel or ironing mat to smooth the stitched surface without damage
