Product Description

Fresh and modern, this shawl also has magical powers. It will envelop the wearer in a sprinkling of the luck of the Irish.

This shawl is triangular construction knit from the top neck edge down. It can be knit from one ball of sock yarn and the size can easily be modified.

For my sample pictured I used approx 440 yards of sock yarn. The pattern has been written with one less repeat than I did for the sample to allow it to be made from one ball of sock yarn. However you can do as many or as few repeats as you like to match the amount of yarn you have.

Pattern includes both written and charted instructions.

Lucky Clover Shawl by Helen Stewart

What is Being Made

The Lucky Clover Shawl is a triangular knitted shawl designed by Helen Stewart. This fresh and modern accessory features a whimsical Irish-inspired theme, intended to envelop the wearer in luck. The shawl is worked from the top down, beginning at the neck and expanding to a generous triangular point, making it an elegant layering piece suitable for various occasions.

Construction and Design

This shawl employs triangular construction worked from the middle of the neck down to the point. The design consists of two triangles separated by a centre stitch, which helps organize the increasing stitches as the shawl expands. The pattern is structured so that the number of stitches per row increases by 4 stitches on every odd-numbered row, creating the characteristic triangular silhouette. Stitch markers are recommended to be placed before the centre stitch and on either side of the garter stitch centre sections to aid in tracking pattern progression.

Lace Pattern and Techniques

The Lucky Clover Shawl features a lace pattern that repeats over 10 rows. The lace border can be started after any repeat, offering flexibility in pattern placement and allowing knitters to customize the aesthetic of their finished piece. This lace work adds delicate visual interest while maintaining the shawl's lightweight, elegant drape.

Finished Measurements

  • Width across the top: 112cm (44 inches)
  • Length from neck to point: 50cm (20 inches)

Size Customization

One of the key features of this pattern is its easy size modification capability. The top-down construction and row-by-row increases allow knitters to adjust the finished dimensions by simply continuing to knit additional pattern repeats until reaching their desired size.

Yarn and Materials

The Lucky Clover Shawl is designed to be knit from one generous 100g ball of Posh Yarn Elinor, which contains 366 metres (400 yards) of yarn. This yarn is 100% silk, providing a luxurious, lustrous finish that showcases the lace pattern beautifully. The 4-ply yarn weight creates a delicate fabric suitable for a refined shawl construction.

Needles Required

Knitters will need 4mm (US 6) circular needles measuring 80cm (32 inches) in length. The circular needle accommodates the increasing number of stitches as the triangular shawl expands from the neck point outward.

Skill Level

This shawl is rated as an advanced difficulty pattern, making it suitable for experienced knitters who are comfortable working with lace stitches, managing increasing stitches, and interpreting more complex stitch patterns. The combination of lace work and the geometric construction requires solid foundational knitting skills and attention to detail.
