Product Description

The Louis Cozy Throw was named for my dear husband, and inspired by finding the crimp stitch for this blanket. It’s a great texture stitch made with post stitches and double crochet that looks more complicated than it is.

By using a blanket yarn, this throw can be made within a week or two, depending on the size you choose to make. And it can function like a weighted blanket.

The free version is available on my blog, Creations By Courtney

The finished size of the blanket may vary based upon the chosen yarn. By choosing a yarn without stretch, the finished measurements will match what's listed in the pattern. A yarn that has some stretch may measure smaller.

Instructions include three sizes and the stitch multiple to make a blanket of any size.

What Is Being Made

The Louis Cozy Throw is a beginner-friendly crochet blanket available in three size options to suit different needs and spaces. This project offers flexibility for crafters looking to create a cozy throw blanket in a baby size (36 in. wide x 36 in. long), a lapghan (40 in. wide x 48 in. long), or larger throw options including a small throw (44 in. wide x 52 in. long) and a large throw. The design is perfect for adding warmth and comfort to any room while being accessible to those new to crochet.

Crochet Techniques Used

This pattern incorporates several fundamental and intermediate crochet techniques that build skills while remaining manageable for beginners. The design features chainless starting double crochet (CSDC), a technique that eliminates the traditional foundation chain by pulling up loops and working directly into the base. The pattern also utilizes front post double crochet (Fpdc) stitches, which create textured, dimensional effects by inserting the hook around the post of stitches from the front rather than into the top loops. These techniques combine to create visual interest and a professional-looking finished blanket.

Stitches Used

The Louis Cozy Throw pattern uses essential crochet stitches including:

  • Chain (Ch) – the foundational stitch used throughout the pattern
  • Double Crochet (Dc) – a versatile mid-height stitch that forms the primary structure
  • Front Post Double Crochet (Fpdc) – creates textured, raised stitches for dimensional effects
  • Chainless Starting Double Crochet (CSDC) – an alternative starting method that provides a cleaner foundation

The pattern also incorporates stitch markers to help track progress and maintain consistency throughout the project.

Materials and Tools

The Louis Cozy Throw is designed to be worked with Lion Brand Cover Story yarn in weight #6 (super chunky), a 100% polyester yarn available in Charcoal. Yardage requirements vary by size: the baby size requires approximately 527 yards (482 m) using 1 cake of yarn, the lapghan requires 751 yards (687 m) using 1.4 cakes, and the small throw requires 973.25 yards (890 m) using 1.8 cakes. Each cake weighs 2.2 lb (1 kg) and contains 547 yards (500 m).

The pattern calls for a US Size P (10.00 mm) crochet hook or the size needed to achieve the specified gauge. Additional tools include a stitch marker for tracking stitches, a large eye yarn needle for weaving in ends, scissors for cutting yarn, and a tape measure for checking dimensions and gauge.

Gauge

The pattern specifies a gauge of 7 stitches = 4 inches (10 cm) and 4.5 rows = 4 inches (10 cm). Checking gauge before beginning is important to ensure the finished blanket meets the intended dimensions.

Experience Level

Rated as Easy, this pattern is suitable for beginners who have basic crochet knowledge and are ready to explore post stitches and alternative starting techniques. The straightforward construction and use of super chunky yarn make this an ideal project for building confidence and creating a satisfying finished object relatively quickly.
