Loops and Rope Hat by Fatimah Hinds
What Is Being Made
The Loops and Rope Hat is an intermediate-level knitted hat designed by Fatimah Hinds. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a fitted hat available in three sizes: small (16" circumference), medium (18" circumference), and large (20" circumference), with a finished height of 9 inches. The hat features a distinctive cable pattern combined with reverse stockinette stitch sections, creating visual texture through the interplay of raised loops and rope-like cables.
Design Features and Fit
The pattern includes instructions for two distinct brim variations to suit different styling preferences. The blue sample features a folded brim that is sewn flat, while the gray sample showcases a flat brim option. Both versions are included with complete directions. The hat is designed to be worn with 2 inches of negative ease, which creates a snug, secure fit on the wearer's head.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This pattern employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques:
- Cable stitch work: The primary pattern element features cables that create the rope-like texture referenced in the hat's name
- Reverse stockinette stitch: Used as a complementary stitch to highlight the cable pattern and add textural contrast
- In-the-round knitting: The hat is worked circularly using both circular needles and double-pointed needles, a standard technique for seamless hat construction
- Stitch markers: Essential for tracking pattern repeats and size increases throughout the crown shaping
- Decreases: Required for crown shaping to taper the hat toward the top
Gauge and Pattern Specifications
The cable pattern repeat is worked over 15 stitches. The required gauge is 15 stitches and 20 rounds equaling 3 inches by 3 inches when measured over the cable pattern. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements and ensuring the hat fits as designed with the specified negative ease.
Materials Required
Yarn Options: The pattern accommodates different yarn choices within the DK weight category. The gray sample uses Dragonfly Fibers Traveller in the Winter Woods colorway, which is 100% Merino with 280 yards per 4-ounce skein. The blue sample features Neighborhood Fiber Co Studio DK in Reservoir Hill, also 100% Merino with 275 yards per 4 ounces. Both yarns are premium merino options suitable for creating soft, breathable headwear.
Needles and Notions: Knitters will need US 7/4.5mm circular needles in 16-inch length and matching double-pointed needles for working the crown decreases. Additional notions include a cable needle for manipulating stitches, stitch markers to track pattern repeats, and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends upon completion.
Difficulty Level and Pattern Format
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern assumes knitters are comfortable with cable techniques, circular knitting, and basic shaping. The downloadable PDF format provides complete written instructions with specific guidance for both the folded and flat brim variations, making it accessible for knitters ready to expand beyond basic stockinette projects.
