Long Cable Cardigan (Coatigan) in Sirdar Haworth Tweed DK – Pattern 10152

This downloadable PDF knitting pattern from Sirdar guides you through creating a stunning long cable cardigan — styled as a coatigan — using the brand's beloved Sirdar Haworth Tweed Double Knitting yarn. Rated as an intermediate difficulty project, this pattern is ideal for knitters who are comfortable with core techniques and ready to take on the satisfying challenge of cable work. The finished garment is a relaxed, longline cardigan with the cosy, substantial feel of a coat, making it a versatile wardrobe staple for cooler seasons.

About the Design

The coatigan is a longline, open-front or button-fastened cardigan that combines the warmth and structure of a coat with the comfort and ease of a knitted cardigan. This particular design features prominent cable panels running through the fabric, giving the garment a classic, textured appearance that is elevated by the rustic character of the tweed yarn. The cables add both visual interest and a satisfying tactile quality to the finished piece.

The pattern is sized to fit a wide range of figures, covering bust measurements from 81 cm to 137 cm (32 in to 54 in), making it an inclusive design suitable for a broad range of knitters. The generous size range also means this pattern offers excellent value as a single download.

Yarn: Sirdar Haworth Tweed Double Knitting

Sirdar Haworth Tweed Double Knitting is the specified yarn for this pattern, and it is used here in shade 913 Millstone Grey. This yarn is inspired by the rugged beauty of the Yorkshire Dales and is produced by Sirdar, a British yarn company with roots in West Yorkshire dating back to 1880. The yarn knits up into a soft, tweed-like fabric characterised by its richly nepped shades — small flecks of contrasting colour woven into the base yarn — which give a rustic, artisanal texture to the finished fabric.

This nepped texture means that even relatively simple stitch patterns gain visual depth and interest, while more complex stitches such as cables are beautifully highlighted against the tweed background. The double knitting (DK) weight of the yarn strikes a practical balance: it knits up at a reasonable pace without being too bulky, making it well suited to a longer garment like a coatigan where stitch definition and drape are both important.

Techniques and Stitches Used

As an intermediate level knitting pattern, this design calls upon a range of techniques that go beyond basic knit and purl. Knitters working through this pattern can expect to use and develop the following skills:

  • Cable knitting: The defining feature of this design, cables are created by temporarily placing stitches on a cable needle, knitting subsequent stitches from the left needle, and then knitting the held stitches. This crossing technique creates the characteristic twisted rope or plait effect seen throughout the garment.
  • Knit and purl stitches: The foundational stitches of all knitting, used here to create the background fabric — typically a reverse stocking stitch or moss stitch — that sets off the raised cable panels.
  • Shaping: Working a garment across such a wide size range requires careful increases and decreases to shape the body, armholes, and neckline correctly.
  • Seaming and finishing: As a constructed cardigan with separate front, back, and sleeve pieces, the pattern will involve joining seams and finishing edges neatly for a professional result.
  • Reading a multi-size pattern: Navigating instructions written for multiple sizes simultaneously is a key intermediate skill that this pattern provides excellent practice in.

Easy to find pattern and purchase it. Good PDF delivery.

Process of buying pattern was fine. The pattern is not laid out very clearly for the front section with cable on it. After three attempts to do it following the pattern, I worked it out myself. This meant undoing my work three times with degradation to the yarn.
