What is Being Made

The Lollipop is a sweet, colorful children's cardigan designed for babies aged 6, 12, and 18 months. This knitted garment features a vibrant brioche-stitch body that creates visual interest and texture, combined with simple garter stitch borders for a polished finish. The cardigan is available in three sizes with finished chest measurements of 20" / 51cm, 22" / 56cm, and 24" / 61cm respectively, making it a versatile design for growing infants.

Construction and Design Features

The Lollipop cardigan is constructed using a raglan sleeve construction method, which creates seamless shaping from the neckline down through the shoulders and into the sleeves. This classic knitting technique ensures a comfortable, well-fitting garment that moves naturally with a child's body. The raglan sleeves are paired with upper arm measurements of 9" / 23cm, 10" / 25cm, and 11" / 28cm across the three sizes, providing appropriate ease for a young child's active wear.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This intermediate-level pattern assumes prior knowledge of brioche knitting, an advanced stitch technique that creates a distinctive textured fabric with a luxurious appearance. The colorful brioche body forms the focal point of the design, elevating the cardigan beyond a basic children's garment. Garter stitch, one of the most fundamental knitting stitches, is used for the borders to frame the brioche work and provide structure and stability to the edges. The pattern includes basic brioche knitting information and uses standard knitting abbreviations throughout.

Yarn and Materials

The Lollipop cardigan is designed to be knitted with DK weight yarn, a versatile yarn weight suitable for creating garments with good drape and definition. The main color (MC) is worked in Yarnstories fine merino DK, a premium merino wool yarn that offers softness and breathability ideal for delicate baby skin. The pattern requires 2, 3, or 3 x 50 gram balls (approximately 240 to 360 meters total) in the shade Burnt Sienna for the three sizes respectively. A contrasting color (CC) is introduced through Wendy ROAM Fusion, a 4 ply wool blend containing 75% wool, with approximately 50 grams used from one 100 gram ball to create the colorful brioche pattern work.

Tools Required

The pattern calls for 4.5 mm needles (UK size 7, USA size 7) in both straight and circular configurations, allowing knitters to work flat sections and seamlessly join rounds as needed for the raglan construction and body shaping.
