Lockdown Drinking Mitt Crochet Pattern

What Is Being Made

The Lockdown Drinking Mitt is a beginner-friendly crochet pattern designed by Crafty Penguin Crochet. This project creates a functional drinking mitt—a hand-warming accessory perfect for holding cold beverages. The pattern offers two size options: Small/Medium measuring 4.75 inches high and 4.5 inches wide (excluding cuff), and Medium/Large measuring 5.5 inches high and 5 inches wide (excluding cuff).

Crochet Techniques Used

This pattern employs several fundamental crochet techniques suitable for beginners. The construction utilizes both standard stitches and post stitches to create texture and structure. The pattern incorporates textured stitching methods, including work in the third loop of stitches to create visual interest. Post stitches—specifically front post double crochet and back post double crochet—are used to add dimensional detail to the finished mitt.

Stitches Used

  • Chain (CH): The foundational stitch used to create the base of the pattern
  • Single Crochet (SC): A basic short stitch used throughout the pattern
  • Half-Double Crochet (HDC): A medium-height stitch that forms the primary structure of the mitt
  • Double Crochet (DC): A taller stitch incorporated into the design
  • Slip Stitch (SLST): Used to join rounds and create seamless transitions
  • Single Crochet Two Together (SC2TOG): A decrease stitch for shaping
  • Half-Double Crochet Two Together (HDC2TOG): A decrease stitch for shaping the mitt
  • Front Post Double Crochet (FPDC): A post stitch creating raised texture
  • Back Post Double Crochet (BPDC): A post stitch creating recessed texture
  • SC3rdLoop: Single crochet worked in the third loop for textured effect
  • HDC3rdLoop: Half-double crochet worked in the third loop for textured effect

Materials Required

This project requires minimal materials, making it an economical and accessible crochet endeavor. Crafters will need approximately 100 to 150 yards of yarn in DK or Aran weight. A 5.5mm or 6mm crochet hook is recommended for working with these yarn weights. The pattern also calls for a stitch marker to track rounds and a blunt yarn needle for weaving in ends and finishing the mitt.

Gauge and Pattern Notes

The pattern specifies a gauge of 8 half-double crochet stitches by 8 rows (alternating between HDC and HDC in the third loop) equaling 2 inches by 2 inches. This gauge measurement is important for achieving the correct finished size. The pattern is written in US crochet terminology. When stitches are notated with a number before the stitch abbreviation (for example, 4HDC), this indicates working multiple stitches into the same stitch location, a technique used for increasing and creating shaping within the mitt.

Difficulty Level

Rated as a beginner project, the Lockdown Drinking Mitt is accessible to crocheters new to the craft. While it incorporates various stitch types and techniques, the pattern's straightforward construction and use of fundamental crochet skills make it an ideal project for building confidence and expanding stitch knowledge.
