Product Description
My little suns scarf uses short row shaping to make bright 'pops' of colour with a stocking stitch background. The finished scarf measures 130cm x 30cm. 2 x 50g skeins of fabulously soft Malabrigo Laceweight yarn are needed to make the scarf. One skein of Frank Ochre (35) makes the bright little suns and one skein of Tuareg (98) makes the blue sky stocking stitch background.

What is Being Made
The Little Suns Scarf is a lace-weight knitted scarf designed to be worked lengthwise. The scarf features decorative motifs called "little suns" created through strategic short row shaping techniques. The color palette is inspired by summer sunlight and is worked in lace yarn from Malabrigo, a premium yarn brand known for vibrant, saturated hues. The finished scarf includes a small garter stitch border along the edges for definition and structure.
Techniques Used
This intermediate-level project employs short row shaping as the primary construction technique. Short rows allow knitters to create three-dimensional shaping and sculptural elements without increasing or decreasing stitches in the traditional manner. Each "little sun" motif is knitted separately before the work continues along to the next sun position, creating a series of dimensional focal points across the scarf's length.
Wrap and turn (w&t) is a critical technique used throughout this pattern to minimize gaps that typically appear when working short rows. This method involves wrapping a stitch before turning the work, which creates a smooth transition when stitches are eventually worked together. The pattern provides detailed instructions for wrapping stitches on both knit rows and purl rows, ensuring clean construction of the sun motifs.
The scarf is worked lengthwise, meaning it is knitted along its length rather than cast on for the full width. This construction method offers flexibility in final length and allows the short row shaping to create its intended visual effect throughout the piece.
Stitches Used
- Knit (K): The fundamental stitch forming the base structure of the scarf
- Purl (P): Used in combination with knit stitches and as part of the garter stitch border
- Slip stitch (sl1): Stitches are slipped purlwise as part of the wrap and turn technique
- Yarn round needle (yrn): Creates yarn overs, essential for lace patterns and texture
- Garter stitch: Forms the small border along the scarf edges, created by knitting every row
Materials
The Little Suns Scarf is worked in lace-weight yarn from Malabrigo. Lace-weight yarn is one of the finest yarn weights available to hand knitters, requiring appropriately sized needles and creating an airy, delicate fabric ideal for scarves and shawls. The specific color combination chosen by designer Emma Vining evokes the warmth and brightness of a summer sky, making this scarf both a functional and artistic accessory.
Knitters will need needles appropriate for lace-weight yarn, typically in the US 000–1 range, though the specific needle size should be confirmed in the complete pattern. The lace-weight construction combined with short row shaping creates a refined, sophisticated finished piece suitable for intermediate knitters with experience in shaping techniques.
