Product Description

This is a slouchy bonnet, knitted in the round and worked in one piece from the bottom up. After casting on, the brim is worked in 1x1 rib before commencing onto the lace body of the bonnet. This is then followed by the crown shaping and an I-cord finish.

Instructions for this bonnet are provided in written format only.

The design on this bonnet was inspired by the hat worn by Ruby in the TV show, Once Upon A Time. Red/Ruby was my favourite character from the show and I just loved her hat from the moment I saw it. This bonnet is not as slouchy as the hat that Ruby wore … it is more fitted with crown shaping too.

I’ve called it a bonnet rather than a beret as I live in Stewarton, which is famous for its bonnets.

What is Being Made

The Little Red Riding Bonnet is a fitted knitted bonnet designed for average-sized adult heads, measuring approximately 10 inches (25.5 cm) in diameter when laid flat. Inspired by the hat worn by the character Ruby in the television series Once Upon A Time, this bonnet features crown shaping for a more tailored fit compared to slouchy beret styles. The designer, Amanda Clark from Stewarton—historically known as "The Bonnet Toun" for its centuries-old bonnet-knitting tradition—created this piece as a tribute to her favorite character while honoring her town's textile heritage.

Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project employs several essential bonnet construction techniques. The pattern incorporates crown shaping to create a fitted silhouette that contours to the head rather than sitting loosely. The construction method combines different needle types to manage the decreasing stitches as the crown tapers. Knitters will work with both flat needles and circular needles during construction, transitioning to double-pointed needles as the stitch count decreases near the crown. The use of a lace pattern adds visual interest and texture throughout the bonnet.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch pattern is a lace pattern, which is worked over the main body of the bonnet. This openwork stitch creates an elegant, delicate appearance while maintaining the structure needed for a fitted bonnet. The lace pattern is worked at a gauge of 24 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches using 3.25mm needles, ensuring consistent drape and fit.

Materials and Tools

  • Yarn: 172 meters (189 yards) of Artesano 100% Alpaca 4-ply yarn in shade 1532 Chile—a natural fiber choice that provides warmth and softness suitable for a bonnet worn close to the face
  • Needles: 3.25mm straight knitting needles for the main construction, 3.25mm circular needle (40cm long) for working in the round, and 3.25mm double-pointed needles (dpns) for crown decreases
  • Notions: 1 stitch marker to track pattern repeats and construction points

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, this pattern is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle crown shaping and lace pattern work. The combination of techniques—managing multiple needle types, working decreases for crown shaping, and maintaining lace pattern integrity—makes this an engaging project for developing knitters.
