Product Description

This was a stashbuster hat for me over lockdown, I wasn’t intending to release the pattern but a few people asked me for it. ‘Iced Gem’ has sadly been discontinued from Erika Knight’s British Blue Wool range, but is still available in some online stores, along with many other gorgeous colours. Of course you can use any DK yarn from your stash that meets the given tension.

I chose to duplicate stitch the trees in Rowan Kid Classic, again because I was using up yarn I already had in the house and the colour and halo went well with the main shade. Kid Classic is actually an Aran weight yarn and I wouldn’t normally recommend working Swiss darning with a heavier weight yarn than the main yarn, but after swatching I felt it worked well for the motif.

As always I recommend you work a swatch for gauge but if you are substituting yarns that differ in weight slightly then this is a must!

Instructions are included for knitting flat or in the round.

Little Lelant Knitted Hat by Faye Perriam-Reed

What is Being Made

Little Lelant is a knitted hat designed by Faye Perriam-Reed, available in five sizes ranging from Preemie through Child. The hat features a classic crown-to-hem construction and is suitable for infants and young children, with head circumferences fitting from 31cm (12¼ inches) for Preemies up to 48cm (19 inches) for Children. The finished hat circumferences range from 29cm (11½ inches) to 43½cm (17 inches), with lengths from 11cm (4¼ inches) to 18½cm (7¼ inches) depending on size.

Construction Methods

Little Lelant offers knitters flexibility in their approach, as the pattern provides instructions for working both flat and in the round. This dual-method design allows crafters to choose their preferred knitting technique based on their skill level and available tools. The pattern includes detailed abbreviations and notes to support intermediate-level knitters through the construction process.

Stitches and Techniques

While specific stitch patterns are referenced within the downloadable PDF instructions, the pattern employs standard knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate knitters. The hat's construction from crown to hem suggests shaping techniques typical of fitted hat designs, allowing the garment to conform properly to different head sizes across the five size options.

Yarn and Materials

Little Lelant uses a combination of two yarns to create its finished fabric. Yarn A is Erika Knight British Blue Wool in the colorway Iced Gem (108), a DK weight yarn composed of 100% Blue Faced Leicester wool. The yardage requirements are minimal, needing only 1 ball (25g) for the Preemie size and 2 balls (25g each) for Baby, Toddler, and Child sizes, providing 55 meters (60 yards) per 25g ball. Yarn B is Rowan Kid Classic in the colorway Canard, an Aran weight yarn containing 70% wool, 22% mohair, and 8% polyamide, requiring 1 x 50g ball which provides 140 meters (153 yards). The pattern is worked on needles appropriate for DK weight yarn, making this an accessible project for intermediate knitters seeking a quick, stash-busting hat.
