Little Drummer Boy Knitted Toy by Andrew Lucas

What is Being Made

The Little Drummer Boy is a beginner-friendly knitted doll designed as a small stuffed toy, approximately 16 centimeters in height. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a charming chocolate orange-colored character suitable for children or as a decorative handmade gift.

Knitting Techniques Used

This pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for beginners learning to construct three-dimensional toys. The design uses color-work construction, where different colored sections are created by changing yarn mid-project rather than using intarsia or fair isle methods. The body is shaped through strategic increases and decreases to form the cylindrical torso and rounded head. The pattern demonstrates shaping for garment construction, including shoulder decreases to taper the body and head increases to create fullness for the facial area.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Little Drummer Boy pattern utilizes two primary stitch patterns:

  • Stocking Stitch (St St) – The dominant stitch throughout most of the toy, created by alternating knit rows and purl rows. This produces a smooth, flat fabric with a distinctive V-pattern on the right side, ideal for creating a neat finished appearance on stuffed toys.
  • Garter Stitch (Gs) – Created by knitting every row, producing a textured, bumpy fabric. This stitch provides structure and is used selectively in the pattern.

The pattern also incorporates standard shaping techniques including knit two together (k2tog) decreases for tapering and increases (inc) for expanding sections. The finishing technique of breaking off yarn and threading through remaining stitches creates a gathered closure for the head.

Materials and Tools

This project requires minimal materials, making it economical and accessible for beginners. 3.25mm knitting needles are used throughout the entire pattern. The yarn is double knitting weight wool, with small oddments needed in multiple colors: red, green, yellow, beige, brown, and black. A small amount of polyester stuffing is required to fill the completed toy before closure, giving it dimension and shape.

Pattern Structure and Construction

The toy is constructed in distinct sections. The body begins with casting on 25 stitches and immediately increases in every stitch to 50 stitches in the first row, creating a wider base. Stocking stitch rows follow, with color changes introducing the red, yellow, and green sections that likely represent the drummer boy's clothing. Shoulder shaping narrows the body before transitioning to the head section. The head is increased to 37 stitches and worked in stocking stitch before decreasing back to a closed point. This modular approach allows knitters to understand how basic increases and decreases create dimensional toy shapes.
