Product Description
Beginner friendly crochet pattern for a lovely backpack. The pattern starts with a circle that creates the bottom of the bag. The main body of the bag is then worked in rounds using single crochet stitch. The front of the bag has a lovely picture of Lipa (linden tree) that has a special place in my national history. This symbolic tree is used in many handmade designs throughout the history - tablecovers, doilies and national dresses.
The finished bag is 24cm wide and 32cm tall, the pattern includes notes on adjusting the size should you wish to do so.
The tree design has been made into a simple to follow chart. The pattern includes a link to a video tutorial to help with the colour changes and tips on carrying the yarn.
I used Scheepjes Cahlista cotton yarn but you can substitute for any aran/worsted weight yarn. I used 4 balls in main colour and 1 ball of each in white, black and darker grey.
Lipa Backpack by Veronika Cromwell
What is Being Made
The Lipa Backpack is a beginner-friendly crochet project designed by Veronika Cromwell. This structured bag measures 24cm in width by 32cm in height, making it a practical everyday accessory. The backpack features a decorative tree motif on the front and is constructed using a combination of solid-colored panels in a contemporary color palette.
Construction Techniques
The Lipa Backpack is constructed using a distinctive bottom-up approach. The pattern begins by crocheting a circle that forms the foundation and bottom of the backpack. The body of the bag is then worked in straight rows directly onto this circular base, creating a structured shape. The front panel incorporates a charted tree design that is integrated into the main fabric. To add visual interest and detail, black yarn is carried around the back of the work and crocheted over, creating a subtle textural element without requiring color changes throughout the entire piece.
Crochet Stitches Used
- Chain stitch (ch) - used for foundation and shaping
- Single crochet (sc) - the primary stitch for the main fabric
- Single crochet through back loop only (sc blo) - creates texture and definition with a tension of 18 stitches by 16 rows over a 10cm x 10cm swatch
- Slip stitch (sl st) - used for joining and finishing
- Magic circle (mc) - used to start the circular base
Materials and Yarn
This project uses Scheepjes Cahlista, a premium aran/worsted weight yarn composed of 100% double gassed cotton. Each ball contains 85 meters of yarn per 50 grams. The color palette consists of four different shades: Metal Grey, Bridal White, Jet Black, and Mercury. You will need 1 ball each of Metal Grey, Bridal White, and Jet Black, plus 4 balls of Mercury for the main body of the backpack.
Tools Required
- 4.5mm crochet hook - primary hook for the main fabric
- 3mm crochet hook - used for finer detail work or finishing
- Yarn needle for weaving in ends
- Scissors for cutting yarn
Skill Level
Rated as a beginner difficulty project, the Lipa Backpack is accessible to crocheters who are comfortable with fundamental stitches and basic shaping techniques. The use of simple stitches like single crochet and straightforward construction methods makes this an ideal project for developing crocheters looking to expand their skills into structured bag construction.
