Product Description
Lingo is a squishy cowl comprised of garter stitch and cables. Just like words, it looks more complex than it really is.
Finished Size: 34” around, 6.5” tall
Yarn: Supercraftygirl Oasis DK, 75% Superwash Merino/25% nylon, 225 yards/100 grams (Sample knit in Semantics). Sample used 200 yards.
Needles: 24” circular needles, size 5 US (3.75 mm), or size to obtain gauge
Gauge: 20 stitches/28 rows per 4” in blocked stockinette, knit in the round. Gauge is not critical with this item, but will affect drape and amount of yarn used.
This is written to use all of one skein of Oasis DK. The size is adjustable quite easily; making it larger will require more yarn.
Lingo Cowl by Corrine Walcher
What Is Being Made
The Lingo Cowl is a squishy, textured cowl designed by Corrine Walcher. This knitted accessory measures 34 inches around and 6.5 inches tall, making it an ideal neck warmer that combines visual interest with comfortable wearability. Despite its intricate appearance, the design is approachable for intermediate knitters, as the pattern cleverly combines simple stitches to create complexity.
Techniques and Stitches Used
The Lingo Cowl employs two primary knitting techniques to achieve its distinctive look:
- Garter Stitch: This fundamental knitting stitch creates horizontal ridges and contributes to the cowl's squishy, textured quality.
- Cable Stitches: The pattern incorporates cable techniques, specifically 3/3 Left Cross (3/3 LC) and 3/3 Right Cross (3/3 RC) cables. These are created by slipping stitches to a cable needle, holding them to the front or back as appropriate, then knitting across to create the characteristic twisted rope-like texture.
The cowl is knit in the round, which ensures a seamless, continuous fabric and contributes to the polished finished appearance.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
Yarn Weight Options: The Lingo Cowl pattern accommodates multiple yarn weights, including DK weight, sport weight, and worsted weight, offering flexibility for different fiber preferences and desired drape characteristics.
Sample Yarn: The pattern sample was knit using Supercraftygirl Oasis DK, a blend of 75% Superwash Merino and 25% nylon. This yarn composition provides durability, softness, and easy care. The Oasis DK comes in 225-yard skeins weighing 100 grams, and the Lingo Cowl sample required approximately 200 yards.
Needles: The pattern calls for 24-inch circular needles in US size 5 (3.75 mm), or the size needed to achieve proper gauge.
Gauge: The recommended gauge is 20 stitches and 28 rows per 4 inches in blocked stockinette stitch when knit in the round. While gauge is noted as not critical for this item, matching gauge will affect the cowl's drape and the total yardage required.
Construction Details
The cowl begins with 204 cast-on stitches joined to work in the round with a placed marker at the beginning of the round. The pattern then follows a chart that guides the placement of garter stitch sections and cable crosses throughout the piece, creating the balanced, visually interesting design that makes the Lingo Cowl distinctive.
