Linde Sweater in Viking Garn – Pattern Summary (UK-2324-42)

The Linde Sweater is a charming children's knitted sweater designed by Turid Stapnes and published by Viking of Norway under pattern reference UK-2324-42. Worked in the popular Viking Garn Bamboo yarn, this intermediate-level knitting pattern produces a beautifully finished pullover sweater sized for children aged 2 through 12 years. The design features a seamless yoke construction with decorative colourwork, making it a rewarding project for knitters who are comfortable with circular knitting and reading charted patterns.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a children's pullover sweater — the Linde — available in six sizes corresponding to ages 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 years. The finished garment has the following approximate measurements:

  • Chest circumference: 60 – 65 – 71 – 75 – 80 – 85 cm (23½ – 25½ – 28 – 29½ – 31½ – 33½ in)
  • Whole length: 36 – 40 – 45 – 50 – 54 – 58 cm (14¼ – 15¾ – 17¾ – 19¾ – 21¼ – 22¾ in)
  • Sleeve length: 23 – 28 – 31 – 36 – 40 – 43 cm (9 – 11 – 12¼ – 14¼ – 15¾ – 17 in)

The sweater is constructed in the round, with the body and sleeves worked separately before being joined for the yoke — a method that eliminates the need for seaming and creates a smooth, comfortable finish ideal for children's knitwear.

Construction Technique

The Linde is knitted using a seamless, top-down or bottom-up circular construction with a set-in yoke worked in the round. The body and both sleeves are knitted separately in the round and then joined onto a single needle to work the yoke together. This is a classic Scandinavian construction method that results in a neat, professional finish without any sewing. Stitches are cast off at the underarm on the final round of each sleeve — specifically 10 stitches (5 on each side of the marker) — before joining all sections for the yoke. The total stitch count at yoke join ranges from 184 to 288 stitches depending on the size being worked.

The yoke features a charted colourwork diagram (Diagram II), which is worked in the round beginning at the back right shoulder. Knitters are instructed to count out from the centre back to find the correct starting point in the chart. Decreases are incorporated into the yoke as shown in the diagram, shaping the yoke as the colourwork pattern progresses — a technique that is both functional and decorative, characteristic of traditional Nordic knitwear design.

Stitches and Techniques Used

  • Knitting in the round – the entire garment is worked circularly, avoiding flat seams
  • Colourwork / stranded knitting – Diagram II is worked across the yoke, requiring knitters to carry and manage multiple yarn colours simultaneously
  • Yoke shaping with decreases – decreases are worked as directed within the charted diagram to shape the rounded yoke
  • Underarm cast-off – a specific number of stitches are cast off at the underarm to separate the sleeve from the body before joining for the yoke
  • Chart reading – the pattern relies on knitters being able to follow a visual knitting diagram, a core skill for intermediate-level colourwork projects
  • Marker placement – stitch markers are used to track the underarm position and guide construction throughout

Yarn and Materials

The pattern is written specifically for Viking Garn Bamboo, a 50% bamboo, 50% cotton blend yarn available in 50 g ske
