Product Description
The motifs depicted in this crescent-shaped triangular lace shawl are inspired by traditional Estonian stitch patterns. The crescent shape curls delightfully around your shoulders ensuring that it stays put. Because the shawl is shallow rather than deep, you get more mileage from a precious skein of yarn that you would with a traditional triangular shawl which tends to get very deep in order to achieve sufficient width to stay comfortably put on your shoulders.
Knit in a fine lacewieght yarn it creates an ethereal floral delight to wrap yourself in, but it could just as easily be knit in your favourite fingering weight yarn with a larger needle to achieve a larger size.
The sample was knit in Zealana Kia Ora Kiwi. A substitute yarn is shown below.
Liliaceous Crescent Shawl by Mary-Anne Mace
What is Being Made
Liliaceous is an advanced-level crescent-shaped triangular lace shawl designed by Mary-Anne Mace. This downloadable knitting pattern features a shallow rather than deep construction, allowing knitters to achieve comfortable shoulder coverage while maximizing yarn efficiency compared to traditional deep triangular shawls. The crescent shape naturally curls around the shoulders to ensure the finished shawl stays securely in place during wear.
Design Inspiration and Aesthetic
The shawl's motifs draw inspiration from traditional Estonian stitch patterns, creating an elegant lace design with floral elements. The pattern is designed to be knit in solid or slightly variegated yarns, as highly variegated colorways will obscure the delicate stitch motifs and diminish the visual impact of the lace work. When completed in laceweight yarn, Liliaceous creates an ethereal, refined drape suitable for special occasions or everyday elegance.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This advanced knitting project employs lace knitting techniques characteristic of Estonian lace shawl design. The pattern utilizes traditional lace stitches and motifs that require intermediate to advanced knitting skills, including yarn overs, decreases, and complex stitch sequences that form the decorative floral patterns throughout the shawl. Knitters should be comfortable reading lace charts and managing multiple stitch pattern repeats.
Yarn and Needle Specifications
Liliaceous is written for laceweight yarn, which creates the ethereal, delicate finished fabric characteristic of traditional lace shawls. However, the pattern offers flexibility: knitters may substitute their preferred fingering weight yarn paired with a larger needle size to achieve a larger finished shawl. Regardless of yarn weight choice, knitters are advised to knit a gauge swatch and select needle sizes that enhance the stitch definition and overall appearance of the lace motifs.
Size and Customization
The shawl can easily be made larger through yarn weight and needle size adjustments. The shallow crescent construction means that increasing yarn weight or needle size will proportionally increase the finished dimensions while maintaining the shawl's signature shape and ability to stay securely on the shoulders.
