Product Description
The Lighten Up scarf is crocheted with an easy repetitive stitch pattern to form columns (also called ribbons). You work several stitches, turn and chain and work the same few stitches until you form a column.
Then, you make a turn and crochet another column that is connected to the previous column and you keep turning and adding new columns. The turns form fan-like motifs on the long ends of the scarf.
This pattern includes written instructions, a schematic, a chart and tutorial photos.
The pattern, as written, uses about 320 yards of fingering or sock weight yarn, but with extra yarn you have the option to go longer and/or wider.
I used the beautiful Malabrigo Mechita in the color “English Rose”. You can use a solid, tonal or color-changing yarn, and expand your crochet skills with this simplified version of the Bruges Lace Crochet technique while making a lovely, lightweight scarf for yourself or a loved one. So, find your favorite color and lighten up!
Lighten Up Crochet Scarf by CJ Brady Designs
What Is Being Made
Lighten Up is a lightweight open-mesh crochet scarf designed specifically for warmer temperatures. The scarf features an airy construction that provides style without excess weight, making it an ideal accessory for spring and summer wear. The finished piece showcases distinctive fan-like motifs along the long ends, created through the unique turning technique employed in this design.
Bruges Lace Crochet Technique
This pattern introduces crocheters to Bruges Lace Crochet, a specialized crochet technique that creates dimensional, lace-like fabric through an innovative construction method. Bruges Lace Crochet is characterized by building the fabric in vertical columns (also called ribbons) that are interconnected as you work. This technique is perfect for beginners wanting to expand their crochet skills while creating a sophisticated finished garment.
Stitches and Construction Method
The Lighten Up scarf uses an easy repetitive stitch pattern that forms the foundation of the design. The construction process involves working several stitches in sequence, then turning and chaining before repeating the same few stitches to build a complete column. Once a column is finished, you make a turn and crochet an additional column that connects directly to the previous column. This turning and connecting process continues as you add new columns, with the turns naturally forming the distinctive fan-like motifs visible on the scarf's long ends.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The Lighten Up pattern is designed to work with fingering or sock weight yarn, classified as 4-ply weight. The pattern as written requires approximately 320 yards of yarn. The pattern includes the option to extend the scarf with additional yarn if desired, allowing for customization based on personal preference and available materials.
Difficulty Level and Pattern Inclusions
Rated as a beginner-friendly pattern, Lighten Up is accessible to crocheters new to advanced techniques while still offering skill-building opportunities. The downloadable PDF pattern includes comprehensive instructions to support your crochet journey:

- Schematic diagram showing finished dimensions and structure
- Chart for visual pattern reference

This combination of instructional materials makes Lighten Up an excellent choice for crocheters seeking to learn Bruges Lace Crochet while creating a practical, beautiful accessory suitable for warm-weather wear.
