Product Description
The Life’s Not A Race crochet blanket is easy, speedy, fluffy fun.
A simple stitch lets the colors do all of the talking. Perfect for quick gifts. The stitch pattern is all double crochet (US terms) in between the stitches. So easy!
This beginner level 1-day or weekend project is designed for self-striping dk weight yarn such as Lion Brand Mandala yarn.
Requires 4 cakes of Mandala yarn or 2,360 yards (2,160 meters) of any yarn. The yarn cakes do not have to match and this is a great pattern for unique cakes (mandalacorns). The blanket uses double crochet stitches in US terms and dk weight yarn held doubled. Experienced crocheters in a hurry can make it in 4 to 5 hours or less. No rush, though, life’s not a race! The blanket grows quickly even if you relax and take your time. Share your project with #lifesnotarace on Instagram and post it in our Pretty Peaceful People group on Facebook! Life's Not A Race Crochet Blanket by Susan Kennedy
What Is Being Made
Life's Not A Race is a crochet blanket pattern designed by Susan Kennedy of Pretty Peaceful. This is a generous throw blanket measuring approximately 3 feet by 5 feet (91 by 152 centimeters), making it an ideal size for draping over furniture or using as a cozy lap blanket. The blanket is constructed by working lengthwise along the long edge, which creates beautiful lengthwise stripes throughout the finished piece.
Customization Options
This pattern offers flexibility for crafters who want to adjust the finished dimensions. To create a longer blanket, you can add any number of stitches to your starting chain. To make a wider blanket, simply work additional rows beyond what the original pattern specifies. This adaptability makes the pattern suitable for various preferences and yarn quantities.
Crochet Techniques Used
The pattern employs a straightforward lengthwise construction method, where the blanket grows along its longest dimension. A key technique featured in this design is holding yarn doubled, meaning you will crochet with two strands held together as if they were one single strand. This doubling technique creates a thicker, more substantial fabric and reduces the overall yardage requirements compared to working with single strands.
Yarn Requirements and Materials
This blanket requires 2,360 yards (2,160 meters) of yarn in total. The pattern calls for dk weight or light worsted weight yarn (category 3 weight). The sample blanket shown in the pattern was created using 4 cakes of Lion Brand Mandala yarn in the Fairy colorway, which is 100% acrylic with 590 yards (540 meters) per 150-gram cake. However, you are not limited to this specific yarn—any dk weight or light worsted weight yarn can be substituted. Keep in mind that using a different yarn or hook size may result in a blanket that is larger or smaller than the dimensions listed, so gauge swatching is recommended before beginning your project.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as beginner difficulty, making it an excellent choice for those new to crochet or looking for a straightforward, meditative project. The lengthwise stripe construction and basic crochet techniques make this an accessible pattern for developing your skills.
