Techniques used are:
- knit in rounds and flat
- simple increases and decreases
- kitchener stitch / grafting
What you need:
~20grams of cotton or other dk weight yarn, for example Cascade Ultimo Pima (200m/100g) in lion yellow and brown (or your favourite combo)
- leftover yarn in black for eyes and face
- A set of double pointed needles or cable needle (one size smaller than indicated on the yarn – I used 2.5msts)
- 1 stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round

- Tapestry needle to weave in ends
- fibrefill

Liam Lion: A Knitted Stuffed Toy
What Is Being Made
Liam Lion is a cuddly, majestic stuffed lion toy designed by Mrsmumpitz (Doreen Blask) and suitable as a gift for children of all ages. This knitted amigurumi-style project combines a main body with separately constructed legs, ears, and tail that are later attached to the finished piece. The toy is designed to be a quick project despite its charming appearance and three-dimensional construction.
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting pattern employs several essential techniques to create the lion's structure and shape:
- Knitting in the round: The main body of Liam Lion is constructed using circular needles or double-pointed needles to create seamless, tubular sections
- Flat knitting: Certain components are worked flat and then seamed or grafted together
- Increases and decreases: Simple shaping methods are used throughout to form the lion's three-dimensional form and create proper proportions for the head, body, and limbs
- Kitchener stitch (grafting): This advanced finishing technique is used to seamlessly join live stitches, creating invisible seams and professional-looking closures
Construction Method Options
Crafters have flexibility in their approach: the pattern allows you to either knit legs, ears, and tail as separate pieces and attach them afterward, or alternatively pick up stitches directly from the body and join them as you progress through the pattern. This adaptability accommodates different knitting preferences and skill levels within the intermediate range.
Yarn and Needle Specifications
Liam Lion is designed to be worked with DK weight yarn, which provides an appropriately sized finished toy. The pattern specifies using needles one size smaller than indicated on the yarn label to prevent fibrefill stuffing from showing through the finished fabric. This tension adjustment is crucial for creating a tight, durable fabric suitable for a stuffed toy that will be handled frequently.
Materials Required
Beyond yarn and needles, this project requires fibrefill stuffing to create the toy's three-dimensional form. The DK weight yarn combined with appropriately sized needles creates a fabric dense enough to contain the stuffing securely.
Designer and Charitable Purpose
This pattern is created by independent designer Mrsmumpitz (Doreen Blask). Notably, 100% of revenue from pattern sales supports the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF), making this a meaningful project choice for environmentally conscious crafters. The pattern is part of a collection of WWF-supporting designs that includes additional animal toys.
