Lemuel the Bat Amigurumi Crochet Pattern
What is Being Made
Lemuel the Bat is an 8.5-inch stuffed animal toy designed by Stacey Trock, originally created in September 2009. This downloadable crochet pattern produces a finished plush bat figure suitable for children or as a decorative handmade gift. The amigurumi-style construction creates a three-dimensional, cuddly creature with defined features and proportions.
Crochet Techniques and Construction
This intermediate-level crochet project uses fundamental amigurumi techniques to build the bat from individual crocheted pieces. The pattern employs the common stuffed animal method of creating separate body components—such as the head, body, wings, and ears—which are then assembled together. Crafters will use single crochet and double crochet stitches as primary construction methods, along with single crochet 2 together (sc2tog) for shaping and decreasing stitches to form the bat's distinctive silhouette. The three-dimensional form is achieved through strategic increases and decreases that create curves and definition throughout the toy.
Stitches Used
- Chain (ch) – used for foundation rows and stitch construction
- Single Crochet (sc) – primary stitch for building dense, sturdy fabric
- Double Crochet (dc) – used for creating varied texture and structure
- Single Crochet 2 Together (sc2tog) – employed for decreasing and shaping the toy's form
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The pattern is designed with flexibility in yarn weight. The sample shown is crocheted in worsted weight yarn, specifically Ella Rae Classic 100% wool in three colors: Black (color #32) for the main color (MC), Tan from Nature Spun in Latte for secondary color (SC), and White from Ella Rae Classic (color #01) for accent color (AC). However, the pattern accommodates any yarn weight—crafters can use bulky weight yarn for a larger, extra-cuddly version by following the hook recommendation on the yarn ball band and adjusting as needed based on gauge. A Size H crochet hook is used with the worsted weight sample, though hook size will adjust based on yarn weight selection.
Additional Materials
- Two 12mm blue or black animal eyes for facial features
- Tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and assembly
- Fiberfill stuffing (a few handfuls) for filling the completed toy to create dimension and weight
Pattern Notes
This pattern encourages experimentation with different yarn types and colors, making it an excellent project for crafters exploring amigurumi construction. The intermediate difficulty level assumes familiarity with basic crochet stitches and the ability to follow written pattern instructions with abbreviations. The flexible yarn weight approach allows crafters to customize the final size and texture of Lemuel the Bat according to their preferences and available materials.
