Project Overview

Learning Curve is an intermediate-level knitted lace shawl designed by Adrienne Ku. This half-circle shawl draws inspiration from Elizabeth Zimmermann's Pi Shawl construction method, featuring a structured progression through three distinct lace sections that build upon one another as the shawl expands from the top down.

Construction Method and Design Structure

The shawl is worked from the top down, a classic approach that allows knitters to try on the garment as it grows and customize the final size by simply continuing to knit additional rows. The design is organized into three separate lace sections, each clearly defined and separated by simple increase rows. This modular approach makes the pattern easier to follow and helps knitters track their progress through the intermediate-level construction.

The third lace section, which represents a significant portion of the shawl's development, spans from Row 106 through Row 173. Within this section, Chart #3 is worked eight times in succession (Rows 106-168), followed by a single additional repeat of Chart #3 Row 1, then finishing rows that include a knit row and a purl row with garter stitch edges maintained throughout.

Lace Techniques and Stitches

Learning Curve employs fundamental lace-knitting techniques that are appropriate for intermediate knitters who have mastered basic stitch construction. The pattern utilizes several core lace stitches:

• Yarn overs (yo) - These create the characteristic openwork and decorative holes that define lace patterns, allowing yarn to pass over the needle to form new stitches and add visual interest to the fabric.
• Knit two together (K2tog) - A right-leaning decrease that reduces stitch count and helps shape the shawl's expanding form.
• Slip, slip, knit (ssk) - A left-leaning decrease worked by slipping two stitches individually knitwise, then knitting these two stitches together through the back loops, providing a balanced decrease that pairs with K2tog.
• Purl two together (P2tog) - Used on wrong-side rows to decrease stitches while maintaining pattern continuity.
• Garter stitch edges - Knit stitches are maintained on both sides of the work at the edges (3 stitches on each side), creating a stable, finished border that frames the lace sections.

The lace pattern is charted using standard knitting symbols: circles represent yarn overs, forward slashes indicate K2tog decreases, and backslashes show ssk decreases. This visual charting system allows knitters to see the pattern structure at a glance and follow the repeats systematically.

Learning Curve is designed to be worked in lace-weight yarn, which is thin and delicate, allowing the intricate lace stitches to bloom and display their openwork beauty.
