Product Description
This hat was inspired by the thousands of people that arrive at my little mountain town to view the gorgeous colors of fall. We affectionately call them the leaf lookers. Cozy up with your favorite worsted weight yarn and a cup of spiced cider to knit a hat for yourself or someone you love.
This design is knit in the round from the bottom up. It includes yarnovers and decreases to create a simple yet beautiful pattern from the brim to the crown. The stretchy nature of this pattern makes it pretty much a one size fits all hat. For a child's size hat knit the brim an inch or two shorter and knit the main body of the hat an inch or two shorter before beginning the decreases for the crown.
This hat can be knit from your favorite worsted weight yarn. The sample is shown in Cascade 220 in the #9694 Raspberry Wine colorway.
Leaf Looker Hat by Jennifer Myrick
What is Being Made
The Leaf Looker Hat is a knitted beanie designed by Jennifer Myrick that accommodates a wide range of sizes, fitting most older children through large adults. The hat features an unstretched circumference of 15 inches (38cm) and benefits from the inherent stretch of the knit construction, making it a versatile accessory for various head sizes. The design combines a ribbed brim section with a patterned body, creating both functional warmth and visual interest.
Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several essential techniques. The hat begins with a cast-on foundation using smaller needles to create a 1x1 ribbed brim, which provides elasticity and a neat finished edge. The construction then transitions to larger needles for the main body, allowing for gauge changes that contribute to the hat's overall structure and fit. The pattern incorporates yarn-over increases and strategic decreases to shape the crown, demonstrating fundamental shaping methods used in hat construction. The use of stitch markers helps maintain pattern accuracy throughout the circular knitting process.
Stitches Used
The Leaf Looker Hat utilizes a focused set of knitting stitches appropriate for intermediate crafters. The ribbing section employs 1x1 ribbing, alternating knit and purl stitches in single-stitch intervals. The body features yarn over (YO) stitches for creating openwork or decorative increases. Decreases are accomplished through SSK (slip, slip, knit), a left-leaning decrease, and K2tog (knit two together), a right-leaning decrease. The pattern also includes K3tog (knit three together), a double decrease used for shaping the crown. These stitches combine to create the characteristic leaf-motif patterning that gives the hat its distinctive name and appearance.
Materials
The Leaf Looker Hat pattern calls for Cascade Yarns CASCADE 220, a worsted-weight yarn composed of 100% Peruvian Highland Wool. The specified colorway is #9694 Raspberry Wine, and one 100-gram skein (220 yards) provides sufficient yardage for completion. Knitting needles required include US 6 (4mm) needles for the ribbed brim section and US 8 (5mm) needles for the hat body, allowing the gauge to shift between sections. Additional notions include a stitch marker for tracking rounds, a tape measure for checking measurements, and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends. The working gauge over the pattern on the larger needles is 27 stitches and 24 rounds per 4 inches (10cm).
