Product Description
Something every knitter should have - a lavender-filled pin cushion for their needles!
It took a long time before I finally conceded that as a knitter I actually need somewhere to keep my tapestry needles safe.
So, tired of search for them under sofa cushions and on the floor, I’ve come up with this simple design that everyone should be able to follow. It’s a great project for beginners wishing to tackle their first cable stitch!
And why lavender?
Well, is there anyone other than a knitter who could accumulate vast quantities of yarn without protecting it from pesky moths? Lavender is a great moth deterrent so having a pouch of it around means that your active stash is safe from harm!
You need very few materials to get started: 2 US size 2 (2.75m) knitting needles, US size 2 cable needle, 15-20g of yarn, 50g dried lavender, 1 tapestry needle
Skills used: Casting on and off, Single cable
Stitches used: Stocking stitch
Lavender-Filled Pin Cushion by ButterflyLove1
What is Being Made
This project creates a small, decorative pin cushion approximately 4 inches square, designed to be filled with dried lavender or alternative stuffing. The finished piece serves both as a functional sewing accessory and an aromatic home décor item, combining practical utility with the pleasant scent of lavender.
Knitting Techniques Used
The pin cushion employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its intended structure and appearance. The primary technique involves working at a significantly tighter tension than standard yarn recommendations to create a dense, compact fabric that prevents stuffing or lavender from showing through the knit weave. This tension control is critical to the project's success.
Cable work is incorporated into the design, specifically using a Cable 4 Back stitch. This technique involves slipping two stitches onto a cable needle and holding them at the back of the work while knitting the following two stitches, then knitting the held stitches in order. This creates textured, twisted columns within the fabric that add visual interest and dimension to the finished pin cushion.
Stitches Used
- Knit (K) – The fundamental stitch forming the base fabric
- Purl (P) – Used to create texture and pattern contrast against knit stitches
- Cable 4 Back – A cable stitch that twists four stitches together for decorative texture
Tension and Gauge
Achieving the correct tension is essential for this project. The pattern specifies working to a tension of 32 stitches and 43 rows to 4 inches (10 centimeters) square when using US2 (2.75 mm) needles. This tight gauge is intentionally denser than typical knitting to create a fabric compact enough to contain lavender or stuffing without the filling becoming visible through the stitches.
The pattern provides specific guidance on needle selection: use a knitting needle size four to five sizes below the minimum recommended for the yarn chosen. For example, if a yarn's recommended needle size is US6, the crafter should use US2 needles instead. This deliberate downsizing of needle size relative to yarn weight produces the required tight weave.
Materials Required
- Yarn: 15–20 grams of DK or sport weight yarn
- Needles: Two knitting needles in US2 (2.75 mm) size, or as determined by the tension guidance
- Cable Needle: One cable needle matching the main needle size
- Filling: 50 grams of dried lavender or alternative stuffing material
- Additional: A foot-long length of yarn left from the cast-on for finishing
Difficulty Level
This project is rated as intermediate difficulty. While it requires fundamental knitting skills such as casting on, knitting, and purling, the inclusion of cable work elevates the complexity beyond beginner level. Crafters should be comfortable reading stitch abbreviations, maintaining consistent tension, and executing cable stitches before attempting this pattern.
Pattern Structure
The pattern begins with casting on 34 stitches, leaving a generous foot-long tail of yarn for seaming and finishing the pin cushion after knitting is complete. The stitch pattern combines knit and purl stitches with cable elements, creating a textured surface. Row 1 establishes the pattern as: knit 7 stitches, purl 3 stitches, knit 4 stitches, purl 3 stitches, then knit to the end of the row.
Yarn Weight Considerations
The pattern accommodates both DK (Double Knit) and sport weight yarns, offering flexibility in yarn selection. Both weights are relatively lightweight, making them suitable for creating a small, delicate pin cushion. The specific tension guidance ensures consistent results regardless of which compatible yarn weight is chosen, provided the needle size is adjusted according to the pattern's recommendations.
