Laurel Falls is a hat that is knit in the round from the bottom up. It is a nice cable pattern. The rolled brim adds extra warmth for cold days.
My inspiration for the hat is an 80-foot high waterfall in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park named Laurel Falls.
The Laurel Falls Hat is a knitted hat designed by Jennifer Myrick featuring a textured cable and slip-stitch pattern. This intermediate-level project creates a finished hat with a ribbed brim and decorative patterned body worked in the round.
This pattern employs several intermediate knitting techniques to create visual interest and texture:
The Laurel Falls Hat uses a combination of fundamental and decorative stitches. The brim is worked in single rib (alternating knit and purl stitches) for 4 inches from the cast-on edge. The main pattern section features a repeating motif of purl stitches, knit stitches, cable crosses, and slip stitches. The pattern repeat is worked across 100 cast-on stitches, with specific instructions for Rounds 1, 3, and 5 that include purl stitches, knit stitches, cable stitches, and slip stitches worked with yarn in front.
Yarn: The pattern calls for Blue Sky Fibers WOOLSTOK WORSTED, a worsted-weight yarn made from 100% Fine Highland Wool. Two skeins are required, with each skein weighing 50 grams and containing 123 yards. The recommended colorway is #1319 Quartz Crystal.
Needles: The project uses two sizes of 16-inch circular needles. Size 6 (4mm) needles are used for the ribbed brim, and Size 8 (5mm) needles are used for the main patterned body.
Additional Notions: A stitch marker, tapestry needle, and cable needle are required to complete the project.
The pattern specifies a gauge of 24 stitches and 24 rounds over 4 inches when worked in pattern on the larger (Size 8) needles. Checking gauge before beginning is emphasized as important for achieving the correct finished size. The hat begins with 100 stitches cast on using the smaller needles, with a marker placed to denote the beginning of the round for seamless circular knitting.
