Product Description
Meet Laura, an adorable little pigeon (columba trocaz) from the Madeira Islands (Portugal). Laura spent her entire life in the Laurissilva forest with her family, but she’s now ready to explore the vast world and photograph as many wonders as she can. Laura grabbed her favourite instant camera, and her traditional beanie hat knitted by her grandma, to always remember where she came from. Are you ready to go on an adventure with Laura?!
The pattern is written in U.S. terminology. The main part of this project is worked in rounds so you might want to use a stitch marker to mark the end of each round. There is no specific gauge for this project, just try to keep it tight and even throughout each piece. All pieces are made in Paintbox Yarns Simply Aran yarn, but any similar Aran weight yarn will work. This project is worked with a 3.5mm and 3mm crochet hook and uses 8mm safety eyes.
Laura the Pigeon Crochet Amigurumi Pattern
What You'll Create
Laura the Pigeon is a charming amigurumi toy designed by Andreia Ferreira of Lemon Yarn Creations. This crochet pattern allows you to craft an adorable stuffed pigeon companion, perfect as a handmade gift, nursery decoration, or collectible plush toy. The finished amigurumi showcases the delightful character design that makes handmade toys so special and personal.
Craft and Technique
This project uses crochet as the primary construction method. Amigurumi is a Japanese technique for creating small, stuffed crocheted toys and figures. The method involves working in continuous rounds to build three-dimensional shapes, which are then stuffed with fiberfill to create the characteristic plump, huggable form. This technique is ideal for creating toys because it produces a sturdy, durable fabric that holds its shape well and withstands play and handling.
Stitches and Construction
While the specific stitch-by-stitch breakdown is detailed in the full pattern PDF, amigurumi projects typically employ fundamental crochet stitches including single crochet for the main fabric, increases and decreases to shape the body parts, and slip stitches to join rounds. The pattern guides you through creating individual components—such as the body, head, wings, and feet—which are then assembled together to form the complete pigeon character.
Materials and Yarn Weight
This pattern calls for aran weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that works up quickly while maintaining excellent stitch definition. Aran weight is ideal for amigurumi projects as it creates a fabric with good structure and density. You'll need a crochet hook appropriate for aran yarn (typically sizes H/8 or I/9), fiberfill stuffing for filling the toy, and basic notions such as yarn needle for weaving in ends and assembling pieces.
Skill Level
Rated as a beginner difficulty project, Laura the Pigeon is an excellent introduction to amigurumi creation. The pattern is accessible to those new to crochet while still producing a satisfying, professional-looking finished toy. Beginners will gain confidence working with basic stitches, shaping techniques, and assembly methods essential to toy making.
Pattern Format
This design is available as a downloadable PDF, allowing you to access the complete instructions immediately and work at your own pace. The PDF format makes it convenient to reference on devices or print for offline crafting.
