Laura Balaclava for Aran Yarn
What is Being Made
The Laura is a rounded balaclava designed by Agnese for intermediate knitters working with aran-weight yarn. This headwear piece combines a fitted hat section with a neck covering, providing warmth and coverage for the head and neck area. The balaclava is available in multiple sizes ranging from small children through adults, with the 5+ adult size stretching to accommodate most head circumferences up to 60cm (23.5 inches). The design is stretchy and forgiving, making it suitable for a range of head sizes within each designated age or size category.
Techniques Used
The Laura balaclava employs a combination of flat and circular knitting techniques. The hat portion is knit flat, which allows for shaping and construction of the main head-covering section. The neck portion transitions to knitting in the round, creating a seamless tubular section that fits snugly around the neck area. Knitters have the flexibility to use either double-pointed needles or a circular needle with the magic loop method for the in-the-round sections, depending on personal preference and available tools.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch structure is stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric surface. The gauge for this pattern is 17 stitches over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in stockinette stitch, making it essential for knitters to complete a gauge swatch before beginning the project to ensure proper fit and finished dimensions.
Materials and Yarn Weight
The Laura balaclava is designed specifically for aran-weight yarn. Yarn requirements vary by size: the 5-adult size requires up to 150 grams, the 2-5 year size requires up to 130 grams, and smaller sizes require less than 100 grams. The pattern samples were created using several aran-weight options including Drops Air (knit as a single strand for a regular balaclava, or held as two strands together with a smaller needle size for enhanced warmth), Drops Alaska, and Drops Big Merino.
Tools and Notions Required
- Knitting needles sized to achieve the required gauge (5mm / US 8 needles were used for the samples)
- Double-pointed needles or circular needles for knitting the neck section in the round, or supplies for magic loop technique
- One stitch marker for tracking pattern repeats and round beginnings
- Darning needle for weaving in yarn ends upon completion
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are comfortable with both flat and circular knitting techniques. The combination of working flat and in the round, along with proper gauge management, requires moderate experience but remains accessible to dedicated knitters ready to expand their skill set.
