What is Being Made

The Lara Cardigan is an updated classic cardigan design featuring a more boxy back shape. This versatile piece can be dressed up or down to suit various occasions, making it a practical addition to any wardrobe. The cardigan is available in four sizes to fit bust measurements of 82–87, 92–97, 102–107, and 112–117 centimeters.

Craft and Primary Technique

This project is created using the knitting craft. The Lara Cardigan demonstrates intermediate-level knitting skills, making it suitable for knitters with some experience who are ready to tackle more complex stitch patterns and shaping techniques.

Stitches and Cable Details

The Lara Cardigan features multiple cable stitch elements that provide lovely finishing touches throughout the design:

• Plaited cable on the upper sleeve: A sideways band of plaited cable adds visual interest and texture to the sleeve cap area
• Fine cable detail on cuffs and welt: Neat cable work frames the lower edges of the sleeves and body
• Cable detail on pocket tops and button bands: Cable stitches provide refined finishing on these functional elements
• Repeating cable pattern: The pattern uses cable stitches (C4B—cable 4 back) worked in combination with knit and purl stitches to create the textured fabric

The main fabric incorporates a rhythmic pattern of knit and purl stitches with regularly spaced cable crossings, creating visual depth and dimension throughout the garment.

Materials and Needles

The Lara Cardigan is designed to be knitted in DK weight yarn, specifically using Rowan Felted Tweed DK, which is described as a gently flecked yarn that adds subtle texture and visual interest to the finished piece. Knitters will work with 3mm (US 2/3) needles to achieve the appropriate gauge for this yarn weight and design.

Pattern Construction

The pattern begins with casting on 176 to 236 stitches depending on size, establishing the foundation for the cardigan body. The stitch pattern is worked in repeating rows, with cable crossings introduced at regular intervals to create the textured design elements that distinguish this cardigan from simpler styles.
