Product Description
The Lantern Granny Square is part of the Christmas Granny Square series that I am sharing as part of an e-mail CAL with the subscribers to my blog.
Lantern Granny Square Crochet Pattern
What Is Being Made
The Lantern Granny Square is an intermediate-level crochet project designed by RaffamusaDesigns as part of a Christmas Granny Squares Crochet-Along (CAL) that ran from November 10 through December 21, 2020. Each completed square measures 5.5 inches (14 centimeters) and is intended to be worked as a standalone decorative motif or combined with other squares in the collection to create larger projects such as blankets, afghans, or holiday decorations.
Techniques Used
This pattern employs fundamental and intermediate crochet techniques suitable for crafters with some prior experience. The construction begins with a magic circle foundation, which allows for a seamless center point. The pattern uses increases and decreases to shape the motif, creating dimensional texture and visual interest. The use of both front loop only (FLO) and back loop only (BLO) techniques adds depth and definition to specific sections of the design. Slip stitches are used to join rounds, creating a structured, flat square that maintains consistent edges.
Stitches Used
- Chain (Ch) – The foundational stitch used to create the base of the pattern and to transition between sections
- Half Double Crochet (Hdc) – A primary stitch used throughout the pattern for building height and density in the early rounds
- Single Crochet (Sc) – Used for creating tighter, more defined areas
- Double Crochet (Dc) – Employed for sections requiring greater height and a more open texture
- Treble Crochet (Tr) – Used for creating taller stitches and more dramatic visual elements
- Slip Stitch (Sl St) – Used to join rounds and create seamless transitions
- Increase (Inc) – Applied to expand the square outward and create the granny square shape
- Decrease (Dec) – Used to shape and refine edges as needed
- Picot Stitch – A decorative stitch that creates small loops or bumps for embellishment
Materials and Tools
The Lantern Granny Square pattern is worked using DK weight yarn, specifically Paintbox Yarns Simply DK, which provides a balanced fabric weight ideal for creating defined stitch definition and a drape suitable for holiday projects. Two crochet hooks are required: a 4-mm (G/6 USA, 8 UK) hook for the main body of the square and a 3.5-mm (E/4 USA, 9 UK) hook for finer detail work. A tapestry needle is needed for weaving in yarn ends and seaming squares together if creating a larger project. The gauge for this pattern, worked with the 4-mm hook, should measure 2.25 inches (5.5 centimeters) across the first three rounds to ensure the finished square reaches the intended 5.5-inch (14-centimeter) size.
Pattern Structure
The pattern begins with a magic circle, followed by three initial rounds of half double crochet increases that establish the foundation and overall dimensions of the square. The structured approach of this CAL pattern makes it accessible for intermediate crocheters looking to expand their skills while creating festive, coordinated pieces. Each square in the Christmas collection can be worked independently or combined with other designs from the CAL to create a comprehensive holiday project.
