Product Description
This cowl was inspired by the beautiful yarn by Ewe2yarn. I knew I wanted to have these yarns showcased together in one piece, they were so stunning. So why not a reversible piece. This is a double knit cowl that was a new technique for me. I have noted the Youtube videos that helped make this beautiful cowl possible.
I love getting multiple uses out of my accessories. One side shows off a beautiful fade and stellina sparkling yarn and the other is a speckled wonder. The transition reminded me of looking out into the distance and seeing the land blend into the sky.

Land & Sky Cowl by Ann Iverson
What Is Being Made
The Land & Sky Cowl (also known as Land og Himmel) is a reversible cowl-style neckwear accessory designed to showcase two distinct colorways in a single knitted piece. One side features a beautiful gradient fade with sparkling stellina yarn, while the reverse displays a speckled merino base. The design concept draws inspiration from the visual experience of looking toward the horizon, where the land gradually blends into the sky. This cowl measures 12 inches in length and 24 inches in circumference, making it a versatile piece suitable for layering or wearing as a traditional cowl.
Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs color work and multi-yarn construction techniques to achieve its reversible aesthetic. The designer strategically combines multiple yarn colors and weights to create visual interest on both sides of the finished piece. The cowl is worked in the round on circular needles, a fundamental technique for creating seamless tubular garments. The construction allows for the simultaneous showcase of contrasting yarn characteristics—the gradient fade on one side and the speckled texture on the other—demonstrating advanced yarn selection and placement strategy.
Stitches Used
The pattern incorporates ribbing as a structural element, worked on size US 3 (3.25mm) circular needles for both the ribbed sections and the main body of the cowl. Ribbing provides elasticity and helps the cowl maintain its shape and fit around the neck. The specific stitch pattern details allow the various yarns to display their unique characteristics while maintaining structural integrity throughout the piece.
Materials
- Primary Yarn: Ewe2yarn Fingering weight, 100% Merino superwash in "Mellow" (speckled teal colorway), requiring 300 yards from a 437-yard/100-gram skein
- Contrast Yarns: Ewe2yarn Swirl Five Color Set in Merino/Nylon/Stellina blend (sock weight), consisting of five coordinating colors: "Reflet" in Pink, Tan, Army Green, Light Teal, and Bright Teal, with 60 yards needed of each color from 87-yard/20-gram skeins
- Needles: Size US 3 (3.25mm) circular needles, 24 inches in length, used for both ribbing and body sections
- Yarn Weight Classification: The project combines 4-ply fingering weight merino with sock weight stellina-blend yarns, creating textural and visual contrast
Design Inspiration
Designer Ann Iverson created this cowl to make the most of stunning Ewe2yarn colorways by combining them in a single, versatile accessory. The reversible construction ensures that both the gradient fade with sparkling stellina accents and the speckled merino base are equally showcased, allowing the wearer to choose which side to display based on preference or outfit coordination.
