Lana Poncho (Adult) Crochet Pattern by Sarah Ruane

What is Being Made

The Lana Poncho is an adult-sized crochet poncho designed by Sarah Ruane. This garment is crafted using the crochet technique and is suitable for intermediate-level crafters. The pattern includes eight different size options ranging from extra-small (XS) to 5X, allowing for a customizable fit across various body types and measurements.

Crochet Techniques and Construction

This poncho is constructed using fundamental crochet techniques that intermediate crafters will find accessible. The pattern employs an alternating stitch pattern of double crochet (dc) and single crochet (sc), which creates visual texture and structural interest throughout the garment. This combination of stitches is a common approach in crochet garment construction, as it balances drape, warmth, and ease of construction. The alternating stitch method helps create a fabric with good elasticity and flexibility, making it ideal for a poncho-style garment that needs to fit comfortably over the shoulders and torso.

Stitches Used

The primary stitches featured in this pattern include:

  • Chain stitch (ch) – used for foundation and increases
  • Double crochet (dc) – a taller stitch that forms the primary structure
  • Single crochet (sc)
  • Slip stitch (sl st) – used for joining rounds and finishing
  • Turning chain (tch) – used at the beginning of rows to achieve proper height

Materials and Tools Required

Yarn: The pattern calls for any #5/Bulky weight yarn. The sample garment pictured in the pattern was created using WeCrochet Wonderfluff, a premium bulky-weight yarn composed of 70% Baby Alpaca, 7% Merino Wool, and 23% Nylon. This yarn is available in 50-gram skeins with a yardage of 142 yards (130 meters) per skein. Specific yardage requirements vary by size and are detailed within the pattern documentation.

Hook and Notions: A 6mm (J-10) crochet hook is recommended, though crafters should select a hook size necessary to achieve the specified gauge. Additional items needed include a yarn needle for weaving in ends and six stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping throughout construction.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 10 stitches by 9 rows measuring 4 inches by 4 inches (10 cm by 10 cm) when measured over the alternating double crochet and single crochet stitch pattern. Achieving proper gauge is essential for ensuring the finished poncho matches the intended measurements for your selected size. The pattern provides detailed measurements for all eight sizes (XS, S, M, L, XL, 2X, 3X, 4X, and 5X) on a dedicated page within the downloadable PDF.

Skill Level and Support

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to tackle garment construction with shaping and sizing options. To support crafters working through the pattern, a full video tutorial is available, providing visual guidance for the techniques and construction methods used throughout the project.
