Product Description
An elegant shawl can become one of the most important accessories in a knitter’s wardrobe. On cooler days it can be draped and overlapped comfortably around your neck and shoulders, and on lighter spring and summer days can be pulled into use as a bit of elegant protection from a stray breeze. And for those occasions when casual attire simply isn’t enough, there is nothing like lace to amp up your outfit – and the attention!
The Lakeshore shawl is a welcome lace project for knitters comfortable with the basics of lace stitches looking for a slightly more intermediate challenge. Experienced and newer lace knitters alike will enjoy the familiar structure of a triangular shawl worked from the top outwards, and the “resting” rows of purl stitches on the wrong side. Choose 2 skeins of your favourite colour of Tanis Fiber Arts silver label mulberry silk, or 850 yds of your preferred silk or wool-silk laceweight or light fingering weight yarn.
Lakeshore Shawl by Glenna C
What is Being Made
The Lakeshore Shawl is an intermediate-level knitted shawl designed by Glenna C. This downloadable PDF pattern produces a finished triangular shawl measuring 72 inches across the top and 36 inches from top to bottom down the centre point after blocking. The shawl features an elegant Antique Lace pattern, making it a sophisticated accessory suitable for various occasions and seasons.
Techniques Used
This shawl pattern employs classic lace knitting techniques combined with fundamental shaping methods. The construction begins with a small cast-on and uses garter stitch as a foundation, followed by the introduction of the Antique Lace pattern. The design incorporates stitch markers to help track pattern repeats and shaping sections, with ring-style markers recommended for clarity. The pattern is worked flat on circular needles, which provide the necessary length and flexibility for managing the increasing number of stitches as the shawl grows from its initial small centre point to its full triangular dimensions.
Stitches Used
- Garter stitch – used for the initial foundation rows to establish structure
- Antique Lace pattern – the primary decorative stitch pattern worked throughout the body of the shawl
- Increases between marked sections to create the triangular shaping
Materials and Tools
The Lakeshore Shawl pattern calls for laceweight or light fingering weight yarn, with specific recommendations provided. The sample shown was knitted using Tanis Fiber Arts Silver Label Antique Lace pattern on Mulberry Silk (100% mulberry silk, 500m/550yds per 115g/4 oz skein), requiring 2 skeins, or alternatively 850 yards of preferred laceweight or light fingering weight yarn in any fibre of your choice. Knitting is worked on 3.5mm (US #4) circular needles measuring 24 inches for working flat. Additional tools include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and blocking pins for shaping the finished shawl after washing.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern is designed to a gauge of 20 stitches and 24 rows over 4 inches when worked in the specified yarn and needles after blocking. Obtaining the correct gauge is essential for achieving the intended finished dimensions. Size can be easily altered by adjusting needle size to change the overall gauge; using larger needles will produce a larger shawl, while smaller needles will create a smaller version. This flexibility allows knitters to customize the finished measurements to their preferences while maintaining the integrity of the lace pattern.
