Product Description
In Seattle, we are surrounded by water, whether it be the Puget Sound, the Duwamish River, or the various lakes, big and small. This lace and garter wrap has a lace pattern inspired by the circular ripples and glints of light we see on the water, especially in summer.
Lakes to Sound by Destiny Itano was the Seattle Yarn knit pattern for the 2019 Puget Sound LYS Tour. It is a light and airy lace pattern knit on the bias to create a scarf with one skein, or a wider wrap with two skeins. Worked in a merino/cashmere/silk blend from Indigodragonfly, it has a soft and luxurious feel. If substituting yarn, any fingering weight yarn with similar yardage will work; if you want a similar feel, a light and drapey blend is ideal.
This pattern has written instructions, with the lace pattern charted. Pattern has been professionally tech edited.
Lakes to Sound Knit Lace Wrap by Destiny Itano
What is Being Made
Lakes to Sound is a knit lace and garter wrap inspired by the natural water features surrounding Seattle, including the Puget Sound, the Duwamish River, and various lakes. The design captures the visual essence of circular ripples and glints of light seen on water, particularly during summer months. This downloadable knitting pattern offers two size options to suit different preferences and yarn quantities.
Available Sizes
- Small Scarf: Approximately 8 inches (20 cm) wide by 5 feet 6 inches (1.7 meters) long when blocked
- Large Wrap: Approximately 16 inches (40 cm) wide by 6 feet 2 inches (1.9 meters) long when blocked
Knitting Techniques Used
Lakes to Sound employs bias knitting as its foundational construction method, which creates diagonal lines across the fabric and contributes to the dynamic visual movement of the piece. The pattern combines lace knitting with garter stitch sections to create textural contrast and visual interest. The lace pattern specifically references the rippling water patterns characteristic of Seattle's waterways.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
This intermediate-level pattern incorporates several key knitting techniques:
- Knit (K): The fundamental knit stitch that forms the base of the garter stitch sections
- Knit front and back (Kfb): An increase technique where the knitter works into both the front and back loops of a single stitch, creating one new stitch from the original
- Central double decrease: A decorative decrease that slips two stitches together as if to knit them, knits one stitch, then passes the two slipped stitches over the knit stitch to decrease two stitches at once. This technique is essential for creating the lace pattern's openwork details
- Garter stitch: Created by knitting every row, producing a reversible, textured fabric with horizontal ridges
Yarn and Materials
Lakes to Sound is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, which provides an appropriate balance of drape and stitch definition for both the lace and garter stitch elements. The pattern requires standard knitting needles appropriate for 4-ply yarn, though specific needle size recommendations are detailed within the full pattern instructions. The bias construction and two-size options allow knitters to adjust yardage requirements based on their chosen finished dimensions.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to work with lace techniques and decreases. The combination of garter stitch and lace patterning, along with bias knitting construction, requires attention to stitch counts and pattern repeats but remains accessible to experienced beginners.
