Lainey Babies Lace Stitch Beanie by Jennifer Lee
What is Being Made
The Lainey is a babies lace stitch beanie designed by Jennifer Lee, crafted as a downloadable knitting pattern. This beanie is sized for infants and toddlers, with four size options ranging from newborn (0 months) through 12 months. The beanie features a lovely but simple lace stitch pattern combined with a ribbed brim, creating both visual interest and practical stretch for a comfortable fit on growing heads.
Sizes and Fit
The pattern includes four sizes to accommodate babies at different stages:
- 0 months: To fit head circumference of 35 cm (13¾ inches)
- 3 months: To fit head circumference of 40 cm (15¾ inches)
- 6 months: To fit head circumference of 45 cm (17¾ inches)
- 12 months: To fit head circumference of 48 cm (19 inches)
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This intermediate-level pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for crafters with some experience. The beanie construction begins with a ribbed brim, which provides elasticity and helps the hat stay securely on a baby's head. The main body features a lace stitch pattern that is described as simple yet visually appealing, creating an elegant drape while remaining accessible to intermediate knitters.
The stitch abbreviations used throughout the pattern include essential knitting terminology: knit (K), purl (P), yarn forward (yfwd) for creating the lace openings, slip stitches (sl), decreases (dec), and pass slipped stitch over (psso) for shaping. The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations for row-by-row instructions, including repeat (rep), alternate (alt), and continue (cont) directions.
Materials Required
Yarn: The pattern calls for 1 ball of Lincraft Superwash 8ply yarn in a 100g ball with approximately 190 meters of yardage. The 8ply weight (equivalent to DK weight in standard yarn classifications) provides a lightweight fabric ideal for babies, while the superwash treatment ensures easy care for frequently laundered baby garments. Quantities may vary slightly depending on individual knitter gauge and yarn characteristics.
Needles and Notions: A pair of 4.00mm knitting needles (UK size 8, US size 6) are required for working the main pattern at the specified tension. A wool needle is needed for sewing up and finishing the beanie seams.
Gauge and Tension
The pattern specifies a tension of 21 stitches and 30 rows to 10 centimeters (4 inches) measured over the lace stitch pattern using 4.00mm needles. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for ensuring the finished beanie fits properly across the range of baby sizes.
Difficulty Level
The pattern is rated as Easy despite being classified as intermediate difficulty, indicating that while some knitting experience is beneficial, the techniques involved are straightforward and the lace stitch pattern, though decorative, remains simple enough for knitters building their skills.
