Product Description

What a surprise it was to work with this yarn. The combination mix with Yak is unbelievably soft and warm, and perfect for the coming winter months. Pick 4 skeins (approx 650 yds) for the main color and 1 skein of a complementing color for the tassels, that is all you need. The pattern is written and charted, if you prefer to work from a chart. The entire project is easy to knit and oh so comfortable to wear.

Lagunie combines basic 1/1 ribbing with just enough lace detail to make easy knitting interesting. For tubular cast on and matching tubular bind off details youtube video links are provided.

Lagunie Scarf by Renate Kamm

What is Being Made

The Lagunie is a knitted scarf designed by Renate Kamm that measures 9 inches wide and 70 inches long. This intermediate-level project combines fundamental ribbing techniques with decorative lace detailing to create an elegant accessory suitable for everyday wear.

Knitting Techniques

The Lagunie scarf employs a 1/1 Tubular Cast On as its foundation, which creates a professional, seamless edge ideal for ribbed projects. This technique requires working with provisional cast-on waste yarn before transitioning to the main working yarn. The tubular cast-on method involves casting on half the total number of stitches needed (or half plus one stitch if an odd number is required), then completing the first two rows with specific yarn-over and slip-stitch maneuvers to establish the tubular structure.

The body of the scarf features 1/1 ribbing, a basic but visually striking stitch pattern that alternates knit and purl stitches vertically. This classic technique creates vertical columns of texture and provides natural stretch and recovery to the finished fabric. The combination of ribbing with the tubular cast-on creates a refined, finished appearance without requiring binding off in the traditional manner.

Stitches Used

  • 1/1 Ribbing (alternating knit and purl stitches)
  • Yarn overs (for lace detail in cast-on rows)
  • Slip stitches purlwise (for tubular cast-on construction)
  • Knit stitches
  • Purl stitches

Materials and Specifications

The Lagunie scarf is worked on US 6 / 4 mm straight needles with a gauge of 26 stitches by 28 rows per 4 inches in the main stitch pattern.

The recommended yarn is Berroco Quechua, a luxury blend consisting of 60% Extrafine Merino Wool, 20% Baby Alpaca, and 20% Yak. This fiber composition provides softness, warmth, and durability. The yarn is sport weight, making it suitable for creating fabric with good drape and refined stitch definition. The pattern calls for 4 skeins in color #1306 Eden as the primary color and 1 skein in color #1354 Palace for accent or contrast work. Each skein contains 1.75 ounces and yields 164 yards of knitted length.

Additional materials include 2 yards of contrasting color waste yarn for the provisional cast-on and 2 stitch markers to help track pattern repeats and construction points throughout the knitting process.

Difficulty Level

This project is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to tackle more refined techniques. The tubular cast-on requires careful attention to instruction and practice, but the main body ribbing is straightforward once the foundation is established. Knitters can reference the KnitPicks tutorial on tubular cast-on techniques for additional visual guidance during the cast-on phase.
