Product Description
Two for the price of one!!! These simple raglan jumpers are knitted in parts with a merry band of either ladybirds or butterflies at the chest. They have a button fastening on the raglan seam..The instructions include charts for the colour work and sizes range from 1 to 9 years.I used Willow and Lark Ramble, a lovely pure wool that is soft and has good stitch definition but any standard DK of the same gauge would work.
Ladybirds and Butterflies Jumpers by Jane Reay
What Is Being Made
The Ladybirds and Butterflies Jumpers are children's knitted sweaters featuring decorative motifs of ladybirds or butterflies positioned at the chest. These jumpers are designed for children ranging from approximately 6 months to 9 years old, with finished chest sizes starting at 20 inches (51 centimeters) for the smallest size and extending to 28 inches (71 centimeters) for the largest. The garments are constructed in parts and assembled using seams, with a practical raglan button fastening system that makes dressing easier for young wearers.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
These jumpers are created using a multi-piece construction method, where individual components are knitted separately and then joined together with seams. The raglan sleeve style is a key design feature, providing both comfort and ease of movement for children. The button fastening at the raglan seams adds functional appeal while maintaining the design aesthetic. The use of charted motifs for the ladybirds and butterflies demonstrates the incorporation of colorwork techniques to create visual interest at the chest area.
Stitches and Stitch Definition
The pattern utilizes double knitting yarn weight, which provides excellent stitch definition and allows the decorative motifs to display clearly. The yarn choice of Willow and Lark Ramble, a pure wool fiber, contributes to crisp stitch definition that makes the ladybird and butterfly designs stand out prominently against the garment background.

Pattern Features and Skill Level
Classified as an intermediate difficulty pattern, the Ladybirds and Butterflies Jumpers require knitters to be comfortable with fundamental techniques while also managing charted colorwork patterns. The inclusion of charts for the decorative motifs means knitters should have experience reading knitting charts and working with multiple colors. The seaming and raglan construction add to the intermediate skill requirements, making this project suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic sweater construction.
