Lady of Rohan Square Shawl by BeckyinVT
What Is Being Made
Lady of Rohan is an intermediate-level knitted square shawl designed by Becky Herrick of Sugar Tree Designs. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished square shawl measuring 42 inches (106.5 cm) square in the Small size, or 47 inches (119.5 cm) square in the Large size. The shawl features a multi-section construction with a decorative center diamond, bordered trim, and optional lace edging variations.
Construction Techniques
Lady of Rohan employs a three-section knitting technique that builds the shawl in distinct stages. The pattern begins with a center section worked as a garter stitch diamond, establishing the foundation of the design. Once the center diamond is complete, stitches are picked up around all four edges to work the Birdseye trim in the round. The final step involves knitting a lace edging back and forth directly onto the perimeter of the shawl. This modular approach allows knitters to customize their finished piece by selecting between narrow and wide edging options, providing flexibility in the final appearance and dimensions.
Stitches Used
- Garter stitch — forms the main body of the center diamond section
- Birdseye trim — worked in the round after picking up stitches from the center diamond edge
- Lace edging — knit back and forth as the final border, with narrow and wide variations available
