Product Description

Ladies in Downton Abbey, a popular television series set on the fictional estate of Downton Abbey in the North Riding of Yorkshire , England, are often dressed in delicate, feminine, and classic wardrobe.

Inspired by the character, Lady Mary, whose strong-willed appearance shells the hopelessly romantic heart, I designed a lightweight cardigan appropriate for spring.

Knitted from top down, seamlessly in the round, the yoke is knitted first and then the sleeves are held until the body is completed. The sleeves are finished with shaping and lace section for dramatic effect.

Lady Mary Cardigan by Jean Chung

Garment Overview

The Lady Mary cardigan is a lightweight, feminine knit design inspired by the classic wardrobe of Downton Abbey, specifically the character Lady Mary. This spring-appropriate cardigan combines delicate construction with strong structural design, making it suitable for both everyday wear and special occasions. The garment is designed to be worn with zero ease for a refined, close fit.

Sizing and Fit

The Lady Mary cardigan is available in six sizes: 32, 34, 36, 38, 40, and 42 inches (81, 86, 91.5, 101.5, 106.5 cm) bust circumference. The pattern is intended to be worn with no ease; knitters whose measurements fall between sizes are advised to select the larger size for optimal fit. The sample shown was knitted in size Small and worn with zero ease.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

This advanced-level cardigan employs fundamental knitting techniques executed with precision. The main body and sleeves are worked on circular needles, a method that allows for seamless construction and the ability to work in the round or flat as needed. The pattern utilizes stockinette stitch as the primary fabric, creating a smooth, refined surface appropriate to the garment's elegant aesthetic.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette Stitch (St st) — The primary stitch throughout the main body and sleeves, creating a classic smooth knit fabric with a polished appearance

Materials Required

Yarn: Madelinetosh Tosh Lace in the colorway "Earl Gray," a lace-weight yarn requiring 2 to 4 skeins depending on size selected (2 skeins for sizes 32–34 inches; 3 skeins for sizes 36–38 inches; 4 skeins for sizes 40–42 inches).

Needles: The pattern requires three sets of circular needles in different gauges:

  • US Size 4 / 3.5 mm circulars, 32 inches or longer (for main body and sleeves)
  • US Size 2 / 3.0 mm circulars, 32 inches or longer
  • US Size 6 / 4.0 mm circulars, 32 inches or longer

Knitters may substitute needles of different sizes if necessary to obtain the specified gauge.

Gauge

The pattern specifies a gauge of 24 stitches by 32 rows over a 4-inch square when worked in stockinette stitch using the main body needles (US Size 4 / 3.5 mm). Achieving accurate gauge is essential for proper fit and is particularly important in a fitted garment designed to be worn with zero ease.

Difficulty Level

While the product attributes indicate an advanced difficulty level, the pattern notes suggest a Beginner/Intermediate skill level, making this cardigan accessible to knitters with foundational knowledge of circular needle techniques and stockinette stitch. The straightforward construction and classic stitch pattern make it an excellent project for developing consistent tension and refining fundamental knitting skills.
