Product Description

This pattern uses the traditional Old Shale stitch. Once you understand how to do it, you can also make blankets or shawls from it. It is a beautiful stitch that originated in the Shetland Isles.

I've made it in other colours besides natural, and the pattern includes ideas on how to change the scarf size or use the stitch in other ways.

Lacy Scarf by MouseGarden

Project Overview

The Lacy Scarf is a knitted scarf designed by MouseGarden featuring the traditional Old Shale lace pattern. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished scarf measuring 7.5 inches wide by 55 inches long (19 cm x 139.7 cm), with a finished weight of approximately 174 grams. The project is classified as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to explore decorative stitch patterns.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces an elegant lacy scarf using the Old Shale stitch, a traditional pattern originating from the Shetland Isles. The name derives from an old word meaning shell, reflecting the shell-like appearance created by the lace pattern. The Old Shale pattern is sometimes confused with the Feather and Fan stitch, though this design employs the classic Old Shale construction. The finished scarf is a versatile accessory suitable for various occasions and seasons.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The Lacy Scarf employs several fundamental knitting techniques combined with decorative lace work:

  • Casting on and off – Essential foundation and finishing techniques required to begin and complete the scarf
  • Knit and purl stitches – Basic stitches that form the foundation of the Old Shale pattern
  • Old Shale lace pattern – A traditional stitch pattern that creates an openwork, shell-like appearance despite appearing more complex than its execution requires

The Old Shale pattern is noted for being straightforward to execute, though its visual impact often makes it appear more difficult than the actual knitting process. The pattern's primary characteristic is its relatively wide repeat, which limits adaptability but creates a striking finished appearance.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Lacy Scarf pattern calls for super chunky weight yarn (Weight 6 classification) and specific needles to achieve proper fabric drape and structure:

  • Yarn: 1 ball of Bernat Chunky Aran Acrylic Yarn (Weight 6)
  • Yarn quantity: One 400-gram ball (14 ounces) containing 394 meters or 431 yards
  • Knitting needles: 9mm straight needles (US size 13)
  • Recommended gauge for yarn: 11 stitches and 14 rows per 4 inches using 8mm (US size 11) needles

A practical advantage of this pattern is the use of a single large ball of yarn, which means only two yarn ends require finishing upon completion. The acrylic fiber content makes this scarf easy to care for and durable for regular wear.

Skill Requirements

This pattern is designed for knitters with intermediate ability. Prior to beginning, crafters should be comfortable with basic knitting fundamentals including casting on, casting off, knit stitches, and purl stitches. While the Old Shale pattern itself is described as straightforward, the intermediate classification reflects the need to maintain consistent tension and rhythm while working the lace repeat across the width of the scarf.
