Product Description
These legwarmers are from my college senior collection, "All Dolled Up." They have a lacy lil knit design going all around.
I love purple, so of course I had to make them in my favorite color! I like to call this eggplant.
The legwarmers have a wide rib top, reinforced with elastic, so they will stay put wherever you put them... up or down!
The bottom of the legwarmers is very special. They have a unique footless design, which is perfect for wearing cute little shoes without having to squeeze in your legwarmer.. making your foot.. well... look like a stuffed sausage.
So they are part legwarmer, part sock!
The yarn is a cashmere blend, extremely soft, and washable! Lay flat to dry.
The legwarmer will fit any lady.

Lacy Legwarmers by Vanessa Ewing
Project Overview
The Lacy Legwarmers designed by Vanessa Ewing are an intermediate-level knitting project that creates elegant, openwork leg accessories measuring 8 ½ inches wide by 13 ½ inches long. These legwarmers combine decorative lace patterning with functional warmth, making them suitable for layering over boots or wearing independently. The design is part of the GingerKnit collection (pattern VE108) and represents a versatile accessory project that works well for both experienced and advancing knitters.
What Is Being Made
These legwarmers are tubular knitted accessories designed to fit around the lower leg and calf area. The finished dimensions of 8 ½ inches wide ensure adequate coverage, while the 13 ½-inch length provides substantial leg coverage. The project is constructed using circular knitting techniques, creating seamless tubes that are both comfortable and visually striking. The lacy construction means these legwarmers offer breathability alongside warmth, making them practical for various seasons and styling options.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
The legwarmers are knitted in the round using double-pointed needles, a fundamental technique for creating seamless tubular garments. The pattern employs a multi-needle approach with three different needle sizes—Size 7, Size 4, and Size 2—allowing the knitter to work different sections at appropriate gauges and create intentional shaping or texture variation. Circular knitting eliminates the need for seaming, resulting in a polished, professional finish.
The construction utilizes elastic thread woven through the finished piece to provide secure fit around the leg. This finishing technique ensures the legwarmers stay in place during wear without requiring tight elastic casings that might restrict circulation.
Stitch Techniques and Lace Pattern
The defining feature of these legwarmers is the Pine Tree Lace pattern, a sophisticated stitch pattern that repeats over a multiple of 14 stitches plus 5 additional stitches. This lace pattern creates the characteristic openwork design that gives the legwarmers their delicate, decorative appearance.
The Pine Tree Lace pattern incorporates several advanced knitting techniques:
- Yarn overs (yo) – These create the deliberate holes and openwork characteristic of lace knitting, adding visual interest and breathability to the fabric
- Decreases including k2tog (knit two together) – Right-leaning decreases that balance the yarn overs and maintain stitch count
- Slip-slip-knit (ssk) – A left-leaning decrease that creates a mirror image to k2tog decreases, essential for balanced lace design
- Central double decreases (sl1, k2tog, psso and k3tog) – These techniques remove multiple stitches in a single maneuver, creating the dramatic pointed elements characteristic of the pine tree motif
- Slip stitches (sl) – Used in combination with decreases to create specific stitch manipulations that form the lace pattern's visual structure
- Purl stitches – Incorporated into the pattern for textural variation and pattern definition
The pattern works over 10 rounds before repeating, with alternating knit rounds (odd-numbered rounds) providing structure and rest periods between the more complex lace rounds. This rhythm helps knitters maintain consistency and prevents fatigue from constant pattern concentration.
Yarn and Materials
The pattern calls for 400 yards of aran weight yarn, with the original design specification using Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran. This yarn weight provides an ideal balance for lace knitting—substantial enough to showcase the openwork pattern clearly while remaining elegant and drapable. The recommended yardage is provided in four 50-gram balls, offering flexibility for knitters who prefer different yarn brands or fiber contents within the aran weight category.
Aran weight yarn (also called worsted weight or medium weight) creates a fabric with good stitch definition, making the intricate lace pattern clearly visible in the finished legwarmers. The fiber content of Cashmerino Aran—a blend of cashmere, merino wool, and microfiber—offers softness and breathability, though any aran weight yarn of similar fiber characteristics would work for this project.
Needles and Gauge
The pattern specifies Size 7, Size 4, and Size 2 double-pointed needles, allowing for gauge adjustments and potential shaping variations throughout the legwarmers. The primary gauge is established at 3.5 stitches
