Lace Sampler Scarf #2 by Linda Lehman
Project Overview
The Lace Sampler Scarf #2 is an intermediate-level knitting pattern designed by Linda Lehman for knitters seeking to develop and showcase their lace knitting abilities. This downloadable PDF pattern presents an ideal project for those with foundational lace knitting experience who want to expand their technical skills through a wearable finished piece.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a long, narrow scarf measuring approximately 8 inches wide by 72 inches in length. The design is specifically engineered as a lightweight accessory suitable for layering during transitional seasons—ideal for air-conditioning environments, late spring, or early fall wear. The scarf showcases multiple lace stitch patterns, functioning as a sampler that demonstrates various lace techniques in a single cohesive garment.
Techniques and Stitches
The Lace Sampler Scarf #2 incorporates multiple lace knitting techniques throughout its construction. The pattern assumes intermediate-level working knowledge of lace knitting and incorporates various lace stitch patterns that are sampled across the scarf's length. Cable knitting techniques are also utilized, as indicated by the inclusion of a cable needle in the required materials. The aggressive blocking method specified in the pattern helps define and open up the lace stitches for optimal drape and stitch definition.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This pattern calls for 500 to 600 yards of fingering weight yarn. The sample scarf shown in the pattern was crafted using fingering weight merino wool, which provides excellent stitch definition for showcasing lace work. Knitters seeking a lighter, airier finished garment may substitute with a higher needle size than specified, allowing the yarn to work at a looser gauge while maintaining pattern integrity.
Needles and Tools Required
- Size #4 needles (primary needles for lace sections)
- Size #6 needles (used in combination with Size #4 needles)
- Spare needle in Size #4
- One cable needle for cable stitch techniques
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of approximately 5 to 5½ stitches per inch when measured after aggressive blocking. Notably, gauge is listed as unimportant for this project, allowing knitters flexibility in their tension and needle choices. The finished scarf dimensions are approximately 8 inches wide by 72 inches long, creating a proportionally narrow, elongated accessory.
Skill Level and Pattern Difficulty
This pattern is rated as Intermediate to Intermediate Plus difficulty. It is designed for knitters with some established working knowledge of lace knitting techniques. The pattern provides an excellent opportunity for intermediate knitters to refine their lace skills and build confidence with various lace stitch patterns in a practical, wearable project format.
