What is Being Made

The Lace Panel Caffetiere Cosy is a knitted insulating cover designed by Sian Brown to fit around a caffetiere (French press coffee pot). This intermediate-level knitting project creates a functional and decorative accessory that protects hands from heat while adding an elegant lace detail to the kitchen. The finished cosy measures 16 cm deep by 30 cm wide, making it appropriately sized for standard caffetiere pots.

Techniques Used

This design employs classic lace-knitting techniques to create an open, decorative panel. The primary technique involves yarn overs and decreases worked in a repeating pattern to form the characteristic openwork design of lace knitting. The pattern uses slip-stitch decreases to create elegant diagonal lines within the lace motif. The cosy is constructed with garter stitch borders on the edges (knit 3 stitches at the beginning and end of rows) to frame the lace panel and provide structural stability. The piece begins with a cast-on edge and uses stocking stitch as the base fabric between lace repeats, creating contrast between the solid and openwork sections.

Materials

This project requires Rooster Almerino Aran yarn in the colourway Lilac Sky, with only 1 x 50 gm ball needed, making it an economical small project. The yarn weight is aran, a medium-weight yarn suitable for creating fabric with good drape and structure. Knitters will need a pair of 4.5 mm needles to work the pattern. A button is required, likely for fastening the cosy around the caffetiere. The recommended tension is 19 stitches and 23 rows over a 10 cm x 10 cm square in stocking stitch, which helps ensure the finished cosy achieves the correct dimensions and fabric density for proper fit and function.
