What you'll need

Product Description

As a triathlete who didn’t really swim before the ripe old age of 28, I spend a great deal of my training time face down in a swimming pool attempting to become one with the water. I found myself hypnotized by the play of sunlight on the tiles on the bottom of the pool, and was inspired to recreate those shimmering swirls in a pair of socks. These socks are knit from the toe-up with a simple knit-purl tile design, allowing the beauty of the semi-solid yarn to shine. A two color ribbed cuff and picot bind-off finish off the leg. Pattern includes two charts. Sample shown was worked in Blue Moon Fiber Arts Socks that Rock Lightweight.

Skills needed: provisional casting on, knitting in the round, purling, picot binding off. Gauge: 36 sts/52 rows over 4 in/10 cm in stockinette.

La Nadadora Socks by Rachel Brown

What Is Being Made

La Nadadora is a pair of knitted socks inspired by the visual experience of swimming. The design captures the interplay of sunlight on pool tiles through a subtle tile pattern worked into the foot and leg, complemented by darker blue contrast detailing at the cuffs that references the lane lines found in swimming pools. These socks are available in three sizes with finished foot circumferences of approximately 7, 8, or 9 inches unstretched.

Design Inspiration and Construction Method

Created by designer Rachel Brown, a triathlete, La Nadadora draws inspiration from the meditative experience of lap swimming. The socks are worked from the toe up, a construction method that allows for precise fit adjustments and a natural progression from the foot through the leg. This bottom-up approach is particularly valued for sock knitting as it provides flexibility in calf length and ensures a comfortable fit at the heel and foot.

Knitting Techniques Used

  • Toe-up construction: The socks begin at the toe and progress upward toward the cuff, allowing for customizable leg length
  • Tile pattern: A subtle all-over pattern worked into both the foot and leg sections that creates visual texture while allowing the yarn's semi-solid coloring to remain the design's focal point
  • Contrast color work: Darker blue yarn is introduced at the cuff to echo the visual experience of pool lane lines
  • Picot bind-off: A stretchy, decorative bind-off technique worked in the contrast color that provides both functional elasticity and an unexpected finishing detail

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the provided content, the pattern employs a tile motif throughout the foot and leg. The picot bind-off creates small decorative loops along the cuff edge while maintaining the stretch necessary to prevent binding. The tile pattern is designed to be subtle enough that it complements rather than overwhelms the semi-solid yarn's natural color variations and sheen.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

La Nadadora is knit using Blue Moon Fiber Arts Socks that Rock Lightweight yarn in the main color, a 4-ply weight yarn composed of 100% superwash merino wool. This yarn weight and fiber content are ideal for sock knitting, offering durability, elasticity, and easy care through machine washing. A darker blue contrast yarn is used for the cuff and picot bind-off detail. The pattern requires appropriate needles for 4-ply yarn, typically in the US size 1-3 range, though specific needle sizes are not included in the provided content.

Skill Level

La Nadadora is rated as an intermediate difficulty pattern, suitable for knitters with foundational skills in sock construction who are ready to incorporate stitch pattern work and color changes into their projects. The toe-up method and tile pattern require comfort with common sock knitting techniques and the ability to read and execute a stitch pattern while maintaining consistent tension.
