Koppen Cowl by Laura Chau
What is Being Made
The Koppen Cowl is a beginner-friendly knitted cowl measuring 26.5" x 11.25" (67 x 28cm). This essential neckwear piece features the same subtle Raindrop Stitch used in the Koppen Cardigan, making it a coordinating accessory for a coordinated wardrobe. The cowl is designed to provide both comfort and structure, standing up to wind and snow while maintaining a refined aesthetic.
Techniques Used
The Koppen Cowl employs several distinctive construction techniques that elevate it beyond a basic circular knit. The bottom edge begins with a perpendicular I-cord cast-on combined with garter stitch, creating an interesting textured foundation. This technique is mirrored along the top edge with a complementary bind-off method, providing visual balance and a polished finish. The body is worked in the round, allowing for seamless construction and consistent stitch definition throughout the piece.
Stitches Used
- Raindrop Stitch: The primary stitch pattern used for the cowl body, featuring a subtle texture that coordinates with the Koppen Cardigan
- Garter Stitch: Used as part of the perpendicular cast-on and bind-off edges to create textural interest and structural definition
- I-cord: Incorporated into the perpendicular cast-on and bind-off techniques for a distinctive edge treatment
Materials: Yarn, Needles, and Notions
Yarn: Worsted weight yarn totaling 320 yards (292 meters). The pattern is shown worked in Dirty Water Dyeworks Johanna, a 100% Targhee wool available in the Pond colorway. This yarn provides 615 yards (562 meters) per 8.8 ounces (250 grams), offering a great combination of softness and body ideal for a cowl that maintains its shape.
Gauge: 17 stitches and 32 rounds equal a 4-inch (10cm) square when worked in Raindrop Stitch, establishing the sizing foundation for the project.
Needles and Notions: US 8 / 5mm circular needles measuring 24 inches (60cm) are required for working the cowl in the round. One stitch marker is needed to track the beginning of each round. The pattern notes that a size G or H crochet hook may also be referenced for cast-on or bind-off techniques.
Pattern Flexibility
The body of the cowl can be worked over any multiple of 4 stitches, allowing for size modifications. Crafters can adjust the finished dimensions by working the perpendicular cast-on over a different number of stitches to create a custom-sized cowl suited to individual preferences.
Pattern includes technical editing by Alexandra Virgiel.
