Product Description
Current Coronavirus situation has everyone in lockdown (UK) except for a few reasons, exercise being one. Children have been putting rainbows and Teddys(Bear Hunt) in windows for other people to find. I created knitted version of a front line bear for people to display.
Knitted Frontline Bear by Sam Pratt
What Is Being Made
The Frontline Hero Bear is a knitted toy bear standing 26cm in height. This beginner-friendly knitting project creates a stuffed bear character, ideal for crafters new to toy construction. The bear features a multi-colored design combining brown, green, and white yarn, with embroidered details for facial features including a black nose, eyes, and mouth.
Construction Method
The bear is constructed using an efficient one-piece knitting technique where the legs, body, and head are worked continuously as a single unit. This approach minimizes seaming and simplifies assembly for beginner knitters. After the main body piece is completed, additional components are knitted separately and then joined together using a tapestry needle. The finished toy is then stuffed to create dimension and shape.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This project employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners:
- Stocking Stitch (St st) – The primary stitch throughout the pattern, created by alternating knit rows and purl rows to produce a smooth, classic fabric texture
- Knit Stitch (K) – Basic stitch used to build the foundation of the bear
- Purl Stitch (P) – Worked on alternate rows to create stocking stitch
- Knit Front Back (KFB) – An increase technique that adds stitches by knitting into both the front and back loops of the same stitch, used to shape the bear's body and limbs
- Knit 2 Together (K2tog) – A decrease method that reduces stitches by working two stitches as one, used for shaping
- Purl 2 Together (P2tog) – A decrease technique worked on purl rows to maintain stocking stitch pattern while reducing stitch count
- Casting On and Binding Off – Essential techniques for starting and finishing the knitted sections
Materials Required
This project uses DK weight yarn in three colors:
- 50g ball of Brown DK yarn (A) – for the primary bear body color
- 100g ball of Green DK yarn (B) – for clothing or uniform details, reflecting the "frontline hero" theme
- 25g ball of White DK yarn (C) – for accent details
- Black yarn or embroidery thread – for embroidering the nose, eyes, and mouth
Additional tools include 3.75mm knitting needles, a tapestry needle for seaming and weaving in ends, and polyester or fiberfill stuffing to fill the completed bear.
Tension and Sizing
The pattern specifies a tension of 22 stitches and 17 rows measuring 10cm x 10cm over stocking stitch using 3.75mm needles. Achieving correct tension is important for the bear to reach its intended finished height of 26cm. Knitters should work a tension swatch before beginning the project to ensure their gauge matches the pattern requirements.
Difficulty Level
Rated as a beginner project, this knitted bear is accessible to knitters new to toy making. The pattern uses only basic stitches and straightforward shaping techniques, making it an excellent introduction to amigurumi-style toy construction without requiring advanced skills.
