Product Description

This is the second sock featured in the Claire Ellen Sock Club. The Fraternal Pairs Fili (teal) & Kili (lime) are actually 2 complementary patterns, both written for right & left foot. As the SKA challenge in October is Fraternal pairs, you can "choose your own adventure" with these.

The Kili sock features right and wrong side cabling, twisted knits and purls, and cables without rest rows. For those reasons, I'm listing it as an intermediate sock. Not terribly complex, but not a walk in the park either. It'd be helpful if you've knit both cables and socks before.

The yarns used in the pictures are both Pediboo, which is a little thicker than the average sock yarn. No matter this sock can be knit with a finer yarn just as easily. Pick a yarn and needle combo that give you a fabric you like & the gauge listed. I used one skein per sock, so if you're working with a single skein, I'd recommend finding one between 380-400 yards.

Kili Socks by Claire Ellen

What is Being Made

Kili Socks is an advanced knitting pattern for a pair of socks designed by independent designer Claire Ellen. These socks are part of a matching pair concept when paired with the companion pattern Fili, though each pattern functions as a complete, standalone sock design. The Kili and Fili socks are intentionally designed as mirror-image pairs, creating a "choose-your-own-adventure" approach to sock knitting where both patterns work independently while offering coordinated styling options.

Techniques and Construction

The Kili Socks pattern showcases advanced cable knitting techniques, featuring twisted-stitch cabling as the primary decorative element. A distinctive aspect of this design is the inclusion of wrong side cables, which adds complexity and visual interest to the finished socks. The pattern provides detailed instructions for executing these techniques, making it suitable for experienced knitters looking to expand their cable repertoire. The socks are constructed using traditional sock knitting methods, with the pattern written for double-pointed needles (DPNs) but easily adaptable to the Magic Loop technique using stitch markers for those who prefer that construction method.

Stitches Used

The Kili Socks pattern incorporates twisted-stitch cables as the primary stitch element, combined with standard sock construction stitches. The pattern includes mirror-image charts and detailed directional guidance for executing cables on both the right and wrong sides of the fabric. Knitters have the option to use a cable needle or work cables without one, with the latter technique highly recommended for experienced crafters.

Materials and Tools

The Kili Socks require approximately 320–400 yards (350–365 meters) of sock yarn for a complete pair. The pictured socks in the small size used approximately 160 yards (145 meters) each and were knit in Pediboo yarn in colorway 1190 (Kili). Essential tools include US Size 1 (2.25mm) sock needles, or the appropriate needle size to achieve the required gauge. Additional supplies needed are a tape measure, tapestry needle for finishing, and either a cable needle or the skill to cable without one. The pattern accommodates both double-pointed needle and Magic Loop construction methods with appropriate stitch markers.

Skill Level and Pattern Complexity

While the pattern is listed as advanced difficulty, the actual skill level is noted as intermediate due to the cable work, complex directions, and sock construction techniques required. This pattern is best suited for knitters with solid foundational skills in sock construction and cable knitting who are ready to tackle the added complexity of wrong-side cables and mirror-image pattern work.
